Hi All...

Decided to try and save a few pounds this month and pick up some part worn PS2s, was only a stop gap for a month but im stating to regret the decision.

The car is a TTS, so traction shouldn't be too much of a problem, but unfortunately it is. When the loud pedal is depressed it feels like im driving my friends old Focus RS. The steering pulls from left to right and feels very uncertain about which way it wants to go! It really does feel like torque steer..

Ive checked the dates of the tyres and they are 1010. The tread is 6mm+ so all in all, the tyres should be fine..

Everyone has told me that i should notice an improvement over the Pirelli Rosso, but its far from that.

Slightly confused about this, any one got any ideas

So you drive a £35000 Audi and you buy part worn tyres? Right...

Are you running the same tyres at the rear?

I wonder where people source 6mm+ part worn tyres like that to be honest. The only thing I can come up with is that they've been taken off a written-off car which would concern me as to what precisely they have been through before I got them.

1. You have a TT and bought part worns?!?

2. The tyres you got may be a OEM specific tyre, which may not be at all suitable for your car, and totally different to the retail PS2.

3. The PS2 is an old tyre now, and wasn't particularly good when it was new.

4. Some tyres when used with a different tyre on the other axle on some cars can give very wierd results. Try running a Lancer with Yokohama A10A on the front and Toyo T1R on the back. Brown trouser moments at every corner.

I'm about to flog a Bridgestone runflat part worn that's got loads of tread on it.

Had a puncture not that long ago when there was still enough on the other tyres to not be worth bothering changing. Once they'd worn out, I decided to ditch the runflats as it was cheaper to buy 4 conventional tyres than 3 rfs... and obviously the runflats are crap.

I do see your point, it's a pretty tenuous situation that's lead me to selling it, and there do seem to be a lot of part worns knocking about

By the sounds of it you have no traction issues if your just getting torque steer etc.

The tyres previous owners will have had a different geometry to your car. It will take a good number of miles for the tyres to wear into your setup, so they should improve.

I'm not sure why helldiver thinks the PS2 weren't that good when they were new... they were epic!

Yep i own a TTS and bought Part Worns.. think the word is NOBER !.. The reason is I had managed to get a bad puncture that i was advised not to repair so thought this would be a cheap month long fix before replacing all four corners.

There was alot more to part worns than i had originally thought, so i have officially lernt my lesson..

The car is AWD and has the original Rosso on the rear..

Im thinking of the Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 2. Seem to do very well in all tests...

Cheers All, lesson learnt...

P.S Anybody want to buy some Part Worn PS2s.. 6mm Worn, no repairs wink lol...

Yep, this was the thing, it really feels like a FWD, scrabbly and pulling to the left and right. Infact after more driving today id say it more floaty than torque steery.. Either way its not good..

There coming off tomorrow morning!

Has your Haldex controller gone ? no way with 260 bhp/258 lbs/ft and 4wd that a change of tyre, even to some Ditchfinders should cause torque steer, my Saab has nearly 300 lbs/ft through the fronts and in the dry there is no torque steer to speak of, ok it limits boost in 1st and 2nd a bit but it just isnt an issue.

Could be tracking/geometery but I would get the Haldex checked, sounds like its running in 2wd.

If you want to put the same tyres all round and are a bit short of cash I've found Hankook V12 Evo to be excellent - easily as good as the Bridgestone RE050A they replaced and quieter riding too.

The car is definately still 4wd as there isnt wheel spin or anything like that, just a vague floaty uninspiring torque steer feeling.. smile

Are the tyres fitted the right way round, i.e. direction arrows ?

And are they worn evenly ?

Why do Michelin make two tyres with the same name? It would save a lot of confusion if the OEM tyre and the general tyre had different names.

Try swapping the wheels around, see if that makes a difference.

Great idea... Will do that before i go home and see if there is any improvement..

Im still changing all four, just feel unsecure with these particular tyres, they just dont feel right. Part worn or not..

Ive ran a set of rubber down to the metal on the track and they felt a million times better than these...

Can you get Fake Tyres? i.e Chinese Rip Off

The fact you have different tyres front and rear can mess things up, also as someone pointed out the geo on your car may be completely different to the other cars set up hence it will need to bed in. You may find if that you put some new PS2s on the rear to complement your part worns the problem will go away, theres a lot of scare mongering going on here.

Try buying the average bridgestone tyre, I think the RE040 has over 20 version!

The F1 A2 is awesome, we can't get them in fast enough at the moment!

All manufacturers make tyres for OEM which are quite different to the "retail" version.

Take the Bridgestone RE050A - there's BMW version, BMW runflat version, there's a Merc version, there's a Mazda version.

Even GM get their own version of certain tyres. My old Mk5 Astra came factory fitted with Continental ContiSport2 tyres, and they were god-awful dangerous things in the wet. I'm talking the rear breaking free on a wet roundabout (no diesel/oil involved) at 20mph. I've driven a similar Astra with the same tyres, only they were the retail version of the Sport2, and it had no similar wet issues.

Another Astra of mine, fitted with Bridgestone RE040 from factory. Fronts lasted 20k. Replaced with RE040 from the local tyre place which under similar driving conditions lasted 6k. Replaced with a set of RE040 GM spec ones (from Camskill), back to 20k.

As for the PS2, I always thought it ranked down 4th/5th in the group tests of a few years ago, and was criticised for poor wet grip compared to it's contemporaries.
