Worth a punt.....? PH interest

...well a Ford Puma...not an MX5 but close.

A mate has one which he is getting rid of as he is going sans car. Anyway i've known the car as long as he has had it, about 4 years ish i think and i reckon it might be worth saving from the scrappie....literally.

It's a silver 2000 (X) car but the main downside is it's high mileage (158 odd i think but all motorway and commute) and is oeverdue a cambelt. There is also the usual rust starting to come in the usual places but it isn't as bad as most. On the plus side it's got 4 new tyres and 4 months tax and 4 months MOT.

Now he's tried to sell it locally but can't get rid and he needs it gone ASAP. He has decided that the only option left is the scrappy but TBH i think it's too nice....i reckon i could have it at scrap + beer (£200 tops) Surely at that it's got to be worth a punt?

Or should i let the crusher do it's thing.

What would the drive and dump it (i.e. complete) scrap value be out of interest? 120-130 ish?

Just looked on a scrap car valuing site thingy which gives quotes from about 5 local yards....turns out if it was driven to one about 15 miles away it would get £180!!! wow

For 200 quid? Do it!! I'm actually starting to like pumas now they're a bit older and not seen so often.

Even if it only lasts a few months before going bang you'll get a fun little car to smoke about in, and it will still be amazing value at that price....

It's a shame these rusted so badly. After all, they were supposed to have been the best handling Ford Coupe ever, and Ford have been good at getting the handling right on their cars for years. Might as well thrash this one 'til it gives up!

Well....just driven it home for a "24 test drive" lol.

In all the years my mate had it this is the first time i've properly driven it. really surprised, nippy little things arnt they, and for a high miler it feels nice and tight...

Definitely do NOT do this, nothing at all to gain - you will never be selling this car as a runner, the next port of call for it will be the scrapyard! Also you will be lucky to get another year or so/10k miles (more likely fail & scrap at MOT time, unless you know a friendly MOT man!) so the chances of the belt going are tiny and who cares if it does, then you weigh it in.

My mate bought one with 215k miles on it for £200 around 4mths ago. He's playing russian roulet with the cambelt too.

If it goes bang, surely you're up in terms of money by the time you've scrapped it and cashed the tax back in!
