How Much for a Carbon Roof?

How much would a carbon roof cost? How is it fitted? Just chop a panel out of the roof then glue it on or a bit more advanced than that?

What about a carbon bonnet & wings? These would need to be moulded as OEM really, can't imagine a giant plasticine mold but not sure how else you'd make the mold to cast the carbon fibre in?

Any enlightenment gratefully received!

Carbon is weaved, you need to hire a "weaver", she will come round and basically weave your car a sort of "carbon jumper", well more like carbon “cycling shorts”.

Then you can just use Velcro to attach it.

Doesn't the roof in coupes and non-soft-tops add to the rigidity of the chassis?

I was thinking about a carbon roof for my car, but as it’s a classic I thought that corrugated iron would have more of a period look.

I wonder if you could offer me any tips on fitting such a roof?

Try shingles - especially if you are into the retro-Austrian look. Much quieter that corrugated iron if it rains. You do need to stain it once a year though, which puts some people off.

Seriously though, a friend of mine put one of these on his evo 8. When you factor in the cost of shipping the car back to mitsubishi in Japan as they were the only people who could correctly fit it while maintaining structural rigidity it was rather expensive.

Jigsaw the existing roof off and stretch the carbon across the hole, then No More Nails it along the edges. For that speshul touch go with this green weave, it's got kevlar in so it's bullet proof and everything!

You don't knit carbon fibre. Fibre cloth for wet lay-up is supplied ready weaved on a roll. Manufacturing a carbon fibre part requires a very accurate and very flawless mould which you could not acheive DIY. However, if you could make the part, it could be fitted and would do a decent job of being a stressed chassis member. I see cars having their roof panels removed all the time- once the metal panel is removed the new roof could be bonded on using Terostat or similar.
A cheaper option would be carbon fibre effect vinyl sheeting which would be ridiculous!

you best bet is either aluminum or GRP. Carbon fibre is over rated for non racing usage, and is more about aesthetics then actual weight saving benefits.

Non structural parts would be the most beneficial, bonnets, boot, wings etc.

Just glue the carbon fiber on top - that way you get the stiffness of you current roof, but it is a few kg lighter due to the carbon fiber.

ok if your really considering it i may be able to help first off what car is it?

if the parts are avalible for your car i would recomend that you would need a cage to keep the car ridged.

if not then you would need a mould made about 1500-3000 depends on how complex the shape is.

thb by the time you have done it and had the cage etc prob about 6k all in. it gets very pricy for a one off.

if the car is a peugeot then u might be in luck as there are some wings bonnets ans roof pannels avalible in carbon.

REALLY? There is nobody in the UK, home of most of the F1 teams, who knows how to fit a carbon fibre panel?

I'd be tempted to check his story with a magnet.

Is there some reason you need carbon fiber in the roof and/or the bonnet and wings ?

Drinking a can of coke would be 330 grams in weight gain, a liter of water being 1 KG
