what are the most common topics ....just a few ideas:
LOTUS FORUM
OP acknowledges that car X is a much faster, nicer, better but that it would be "'ad by my elise in the twisties". Basically an inverted form of jelousy. Everyone agrees and the nature of lotus suspension and handling is discussed in more general terms but then after a short while everyone seems to turn against Lotus Cars PLC and moans about lack of BHP in the model range. The thread reaches an emotional high point when someone cracks the oft repeated joke: "yeah ... but I bet the new lotus is 2 seconds quicker round hethel".
PORSCHE FORUM
OP happens to mention a Nissan GTr and the thread very quickly descends into a long war mostly stating that they don't have any soul and supposedly 'drive themselves'. 996tt owners speak out in unison and despite a few lone malcontents who state how boring they are to drive, the general consensus seems to be that the 996tt is the best all round car posrche have ever made. At some point or other someone quotes Autocar from 1995, "the 996tt is the first blown 911 to better its NA siblings".

OP asks if he should get a GT3 or non-GT3 porsche 911 model. Thread attracts many GT3 owners all displaying their battlescars and GT3 badges of honour. Wannabe GT3 owners chime in as well and lavish even more praise on the car (which they haven't even yet driven). Many people state that the car is too hard for the road yet just as many people say that they love it on the road (how can this be !!??). At the end of the thread OP goes out and buys a 997 Turbo with PDK.

Said thread devolves into a long running debate about Stradale prices, whether they are going up or down, whether they are worth the premium, and then a wider analysis of the residual values of all ferrari models. Someone at some point mentions handling and bumpsteer but it only draws a blank.

Announcement made about new upcoming TVR featuring some random choice of power plant. No matter how improbable, lots of people say boo, let TVR die and lots say yay, give them a chance. Then people start talking about why TVR failed whilst making out they have "inside knowledge", or know someone "in the know" so know the "real" reasons. Pages and pages of "educated" guesses follow as to how they could have done it better....all of course made with 20:20 hindsight. Then some bloke with a beard will say why don't TVR make a re-imagined Griffith fitted with a Chevy V8 and sell it for 15 grand? He invariably thinks this a stroke of genius. That's not a single marque forum, that's a single model forum (namely the S1 Elise - not the S2 as it's too girly) and bears no resemblence to a grown up Lotus Forum.LOTUS FORUM

Mk1 owner having problem with rust in the sills, new roof required or replacement decal sought. Any of these issues can be solved for the princely sum of £17.20

Honda Civic forum,
Particularly the build thread, owner discusses the idea of turbo charging his Civic much and receives much initial support, then someone comes in to mention that N/A is the way forward and how amazing Mugen bits are. Owner therefore spends much on importing trick tuning parts from Japan completes the build, then drives it for about a month. After that it's broken for parts whilst the owner goes off to buy an Imprezza or an M3, strangely about a year later said member returns to Civic ownership in a milder version of his great project. Odd people.

After a few weeks, you slowly start to notice that, based on forum signatures and whatnot, that no one actually drives a Mondeo. Eventually you start to wonder if you're the only one who actually owns one. Also, everyone that bought one for a big power project (turbo/supercharger) realises that the only kit available is in America, and costs 3x the price of the car. They end up sticking an induction kit on it, selling it and buying a 325 instead.

every 3rd member joins up and tells people about their massive 2l turbo conversion they are planning. No one actually gets round to it, and ends up either selling the car for parts, or sticking a new head unit in and calling it an "ICE project"
