keep the monaro....or 911

just some general advice really. i managed to save up enough for a car i lusted after ever since i saw it on Top gear a few years back and about 14months ago i got a Monaro. 50k on the clock, 54 plate bright red. FSH totally standard and appeard to be muched loved by previuos owner/s.
after looking through trader and ebay my head has been slightly swayed of late by 911s(996??)range that seems to have droped below 15k. 1998-2000ish reg plate ones. my question really is that i know zero about this range of cars. i dont know the spec and engine levels to look out for or steer clear of. any commen problems that may occur on them. if ill be dissapointed with the performance or even what the performance is. or if i should just avoid any "cheap" newish 911s like the plauge and just be happy with my sudo-muscle car. im on the threshhold of what i car realistically afford to run so general day to day cost and bills would be an issue also.

any advice on what you would do in this situation or any specific advice about this "level" of 911 ownership greatly appreciated.

Can of worms but have a look in the Porsche section and search for RMS - be sitting down when you do so.

It seems to me that RMS is not a major concern at all unless you have just had a nice new driveway put down. The IMS failures seem to be a bit scarier but it seems these failures are fairly rare but obviously extrememly costly if they occur. If it were me, I'd speak to sombody like Hartech and take out a service/protection plan for some peace at mind.

I think that they are quite different animals. Within the past year I bought a 996 Carrera and am very very pleased with it. There are a lot of horror stories about engines going pop, but I decided to take the "risk" after all what car is totally reliable?
I am working in Australia at the moment and recently took a new HSV 6.2 v8 out for an extended drive and although the power was awesome, I found it very different to my porsche and would not change cars as prefer the sports car feel as opposed to the muscle car feel. I assume your monaro is similar to the HSV so if you like that kind of car you may not like a 996.
