good cheap lightweight track car (not kit car)

Im thinking of changing my 306 gti. I have had some fun doing track days but i think something lighter would be more fun. It handles well and the engine pulls really well. It may just be that did a track day on the hottest day of the year, but my tyres were shredded to pieces in 3 laps, the brakes (admittedly standard pads) took a hammering and it just felt a bit heavy.
I was pretty jelous of all the lotus's that were out there. Caterhams and kit cars are great and opitomise a great lightweight track car but 1. budget wont stretch to a good enough model / engine and 2. i want to be able to drive to and from trackdays.
Budget maybe 2k any suggestions?

As above, try a 106/Saxo/Ax. My 106 is pretty good on tyres and brakes on track days, and I've found the chassis a bit more forgiving than the 306 when dealing with lift off oversteer. Also good on fuel - I averaged 30mpg on my last track day- 100 miles on the road and 70 miles flat out on the track.

306's are deceptively heavy, 1200kg+ from memory. That's nearly 25% more than a 106 and about 110 times the weight of a citroen AX....RWD is definitely more fun on the track - can't see much point in swapping a 306 for something else FWD, as they're a pretty light car, so you're not going to see many improvements in consumable wear by going smaller.

I've had horrendous tyre wear in a 70bhp, 650kg firebreathing monster...But the RWD cars I've run, despite being a lot heavier, have been very gentle on their tyres.
run what I've got - stripped out Porsche 924 with bucket seats + harnesses. Very good on tyres, only 125bhp so you don't have to fight it all the time, but you can still get it sideways if you want. (unless running it on Toyo 888s, in which case it always goes exactly where you want it). Probably weighs ~900kg so reasonably light. the balance is great too, front engine + rear gearbox.

Don't be scared by age... I had a 20 year old non-turbo and it put a smile on my face every day. Bulletproof. Every drive was an event. It's only when i get in my friend's Boxster that I realise how well it handled. The turbo's are very quick. Very.
