Big SUVs....does anyone here actually "like" them?

I've also been in an ML before but wasn't really taken by it.A good friend has a new X5 4.0d...but I've not been in that yet

Absolutely stunning. Handling is superb, excellent turn of speed, practical and a high enough driving position to allow you to read the road well ahead.
The reality is that most people can't have different cars for different occasions so they need a 1 car fits all solution. They still only take up 1 parking space / area on the road etc.

I love my X5, I really do.
Like many here I was pretty sceptical, I thought they looked chunky and everything but would be awful vehicles. However I bought a '96 Cherokee as a towing/trips to the dump/random off road use vehicle and discovered it was a great way to get around in general - ended up using it more and more for trips to the shops, visits to people etc.
Once it died, we replaced it with a dedicated off-roader (a Suzuki Vitara) and the current X5. Despite the amazing fuel costs, I can't really see us replacing it with anything other than another SUV. It's even fun to hustle it around tbh.

Have driven most of the usual contenders, don't see the appeal. To me, threading such a huge lump of car through traffic and sitting about three feet above where the (inter)action is, always feels more than a little awkward and unnatural. Few, if any, were actually more useful than my old hatchback Saab 900 for carrying stuff around, either.
I don't really get them to be honest. I like my vehicles low for cornering and looks are important to me. I'm struggling to think of a half decent looking SUV. My girlfriend loves 4x4's and SUV's but she doesn't like driving for thrills.
I've not got a lot of experience driving these big machines so maybe I'd change my mind after a drive. I've heard some of the high end ones defy science with their pace and handling.
(Still think I'd prefer an RS4/RS6 if I needed practicality and space though.)

Driven a couple, dont interest me, not really for Petrolheads by and large (I will forgive the Turbo/V8 ones) but the diesel ones are just for suburban mummies and one upmanship, very rarely do any go off road and generally cant because of the silly tyres, can sort of see the point in the minor snow we have had and the resultant potholes but really its just bigger and flasher the better for most, sure, they can be "nice" to drive but never truly great, too big, heavy and compromised, an Discovery weighs 2.7 tonnes, double the weight of a normal car.
Its kind of what non petrolheads buy when they want to show off, we have a Galaxy to do the same job but it doeswnt have any image, no kudos at the school gates.
We had an Merc ML for a while, crap car and I appreciate the new ones are much better, still too high up, too heavy and ugly.

I can see the appeal with them. If you want a car that is a high riding , luxurious barge that has a lot of room, big boot and also had silky smooth engines and some off roading capabilities then they you won't pick many other types of car.
I don't think estates even come close IMO. I think the haters don't like the people that drive them and the fact that every WAG wannabe has taken out finance to get one on there drive.
I would still buy one regardless and I would not get it in white. I would get one in a dark colour outside and a light cream interor.
One of the current crop would be in my Top 3 Garage for sure.

I think they are useful for an everyday car if you keep something fun in the garage for the need arises.
We hired an Escalade on our tour of California last year and it was amazing. 6.2 V8, ~400bhp, heated and chilled seats, amazing sound system, just a great place to be when you want to waft. We took it through Death Valley and came across a German couple whose hired Kia had broken down. We picked them up, with all their luggage piled on top of ours in the back, in 37 degree heat, and the 'lade didn't flinch.
