I need to sell my VW Polo as circumstances have changed and I have a London commute, is there any point of trying to sell privately? I expect to put it for about £2k less than a dealer price but my opinion was that most people in the market for a nearly new vehicle would be looking for a dealer sale.

It's a tidy car with really good options, better than the bland stock at VW and you can beat the 6 month waiting time. But how many people are will spend 10-11K on a used private Polo?

Opinions welcome as it may go on the 'trader' tonight...

Have you tried your local VW dealer and asked them if they're interested in buying it for stock?

Yep but they have not got back to me and I have chased them several times

I tried it once, albeit with an 8 month old Ford KA Zetec. Tried all the usual channels, on the auto trader, in the papers locally and on Ebay but no-one seemed ready to hand over serious money for it so I ended up trading it in against another vehicle.
Depreciation is a bh.

It would be tough.

Anyone who works for any VW group brands - Audi / Seat/ Skoda / VW gets a free company car on their staff scheme brand new. They then give it back after 6 months (and get a new one) and give the dealer the car back. Dealers then have an endless supply of quality used but almost new cars.

You would be up against this.

I wouldn't be put off buying a nearly new car privately, as long as the balance of the manufacturer's warranty can be transferred to the new owner. OP - Find out if this can be done and, if so, play on it in your advertising.

Ring others, there are plenty - after you've run it through We Buy Any Car for an idea of likely trade value without whomever you're selling it to having a vested interest in selling you another car, i.e. the traditional PX scenario.

As has been said, you'll be competing against plentiful ex dealer demonstrators, ex-manufacturer staff cars, ex-press fleet, ex-corporate demonstrator fleet, ex-promotional, ex-daily rental vehicles all being sold with all the back-up and services that come with a franchised dealer sale vs. a private one. You can't offer a buyer of your car finance, the reassurance of an "approved used" inspection, prepared to consistent standards etc, all of which limits the market appeal of such a car.

A friend of mine has been looking for ages for a newish car, i think she could be interested if you want a no hassle sale. Her budget was 10 but i think she had a little lee-way.
What spec/engine is it?

Can't see a problem myself as long as the price is right.

The car's under warranty still and the new owner can pick it up for trade plus a few quid. That only leaves the finance side, but it's not exactly super car money. A bank loan is way cheaper than dealer finance anyway.

I'd say it was an easier sell than a car that's out of warranty. Then it's good to have a dealer to take it back to.

I've been buying bikes and cars for myself like that for years. Got to be better than a car from a dealer thats been ragged for 6 months as a loaner or something.

It is a 2010 (60 plate) 1.2TDi SE

Immaculate with 30k/3yr service plan, options include aircon, parking sensors, cruise, armrest, leather steering wheel, bluetooth, type pressure sensors and 16" alloys...the car even smells like new. I would take £10,500 for it (saving about £5k on list!)...oh and it has done 9k miles
