A few years ago hardly anyone bought white cars.
The manufacturers had solid white paint as a budget option. Most people paid extra for metallic. White was for Wedding cars, Police cars and one or two specific makes where white was the factory race colour.
I bucked the trend and ordered a white Triumph TR6 when they were new. It looked great, but was such a PITA to keep immaculate that I swore I wouldn’t buy white again.
A few trend setters bought white and then the recession hit. I suspect that quite a few of the new cars sold were ordered white as a budget saving.
Suddenly it seems as if every new car I see is white.
The manufactures have spotted the trend, made white a pearlescent colour and moved it away from being a money-saving option.
My question is how will people perceive white in three years time?

I love white cars and always have. It just looks clean and fresh to me. I agree there's probably too many of them on the road these days for it to be in any way original, but given most popular automotive brands are completely and utterly rubbish when it comes to their paint colour options, I'd still far rather see white than most other 'everyday' colours.
I've had a bunch of white cars. I don't care about trends or what's fashionable, I just like what I like and buy based on that, so I dare say I'll have plenty more white cars in the fleet in coming years.
Pearl white on the right car can look stunning - I'm in Vegas at the minute and last night saw a beautifully modified F430 parked outside of one of the hotels, it looked sensational in pearl white. In dreary Milton Keynes or wherever, it probably wouldn't have looked quite so at home, but that's another point entirely.
FWIW using terms like recession white and assuming anyone driving anything remotely nice can barely afford their financial obligations is the preserve of the stupid and the jealous - it screams 'I've got a chip on my shoulder because I can't afford one', and completely undermines whatever point you were trying to make. Just saying

my dad bought a white Audi about 13 years ago and it looked great. At that time there weren't many Audi's about especially in white as Merc's were the "in" car at the time. Keeping it clean was an absolute nightmare though. I think white will still be a relatively popular colour in 3 years but soon enough there will be a new trend in colours..as mentioned I think it might be a metallic brown.
I've developed a real loathing for white cars, it looks good (imo, of course) on very, very few models. Off the top off my head: a professionals era Capri, Lotuses and was it the Audi R8 that was launched in white?* If so that too and that's about it.
*Edit: answer my own question, it was the Lamborghini Gallardo I was thinking of, but I'll accept the R8 in white too.

Was talking about this earlier, I'm not really sure what will happen. At the moment they seem to be super desirable and hold onto their value nicely, impressive given White for most cars is a free paint option as mentioned. How long it will stay in fashion for is a mystery, I don't think its possible to accurately predict what will happen. Having said that, I can't see it becoming unpopular again this decade.
