Tyres - Cracks in the Rubber?

On tyre (less than a year and 5k miles) has a slow puncture.

Had it checked twice now and there is no hole. But the inside of the tyre has a series of cracks in the rubber.

Anyone had this?

Sincerely doubt it's the cause, but does highlight how badly made the tyre is that it's cracked after 5k.

Some punctures are caused by pin holes in the tyre: you can't really see it until you see air escaping through it (using a water bath or washing up liquid).

It could be that the cracks are caused by the slow puncture, running the tyre under inflated.

A few cracks in / between the tread usually isn't an issue.

But old tyres (you can check the age from the info on the sidewall) cracking is really dodgy - yet can still pass an MOT.

However slow punctures are usually a nail or the tyre not seating correctly on the rim.

Two water tests and twice bead sealer; checked valave. Still slow puncture.

Check the age of the tyre on the sidewall. You may just be shocked.

5K makes no odds really how old is the tyre, i've had cheap remoulds crack on the side wall after 6 months but after checking the date they were 5 years old when fitted !

The Ultrac model he's talking about is no more than 3 or 4 years old, so none should be beyond the 6 year lifespan of a normal tyre.

Cracking tyre is age.

Next time buy your tyres from Costco. Michellin tyres only and brand new not old tosh.

This. I saw some tyres on sale last week, they were manufactured in 1999 (P60000s).

Do you happen to have any pictures of the afffected area?

IIRC the limit for being on the shelf is only 4 years.

I had this on a Continental Sport Contact 5P... Tyre was less than 6 months old (from batch number) and it showed sidewall cracks within 5k of use on my RS...

Sent back to Conti for checking and not heard anything back yet (they reckon 16weeks before they can fully analyse a tyre..!). Keeping a very close eye on the tyres now but they all seem to be good on the new set.

How many miles would your tyres normally last?

If it's only 10k then just run these out. And don't buy poor quality tyres again Michellin only.

Also ramping up curbs can cause damage to tyres.
