Foiled/Wrapped cars.

Why is this done? Is it purely down to cosmetics? Also, is there anything an idiot needs to know...ie does it hurt the original paintwork, is it a nightmare to remove, does if affect the value?

Would you ever walk away from buying because of this?

I believe its cheaper than a full respray and you can take it off without issues with the paint underneath.

i know nothing of this fad apart from what I've seen here, but do the DVLA need to know if you've changed the colour of your car, even if it's a temporary wrap?

Apparently because the wrap is temporarily you do not need to tell the dvla about it for up to a month..

Generally cheaper than a respray, protects the paint, can be repaired cheaply, can get patterns and the like that would be very expensive if done in paint not sure about the dvla thing as you are not changing the colour or the car just putting a big sticker on it.

Cheers all. Thing is, if you buy a wrapped car, it could be covering uyp all sorts of rubbish, eh? It could even be the reason that it was done in the first place.

Roughly how much does it cost to do or remove on say a 2-door sports car?

I would have thought it would be removed the same as decals? Air dryer or heat gun on low?

EG: If your car is white and you want to put c/f on bonnet/roof/spolier - you have to get CID permission prior to doing it and then re-register the car (Reg card will then say White/Black instead of white)

If you want to add a c/f look to a black car, then from what I have been told, there is NO need for CID approval/Re-reg.

Two reasons for foil (both obvious):
1) to change the colour of your car to something unique/different
2) protect it from being stone chipped to hell/scratched.

To respray a car here (no engine removal etc, etc) will set you back AED5-6K. To foil a car, I have heard costs of around AED7.5k (this was a small Type R and the guy gets a decent discount).

What about if it's been done fto mask chips, cracks etc...Would an expert eye still be able to tell this?

I reckon that depends.... I've seen many claiming to have paid £3k+ for having their car wrapped.

I would hope you could get a rather nice paint job on most cars for less than that.

the paintwork needs to sound underneath, ive heard of laquar coming off with the wrap where the car has obeen resprayed previously

also ive seen installers doing wraps at shows and youtube where the cut the vinyl on the car, however carefully done there is bound to be some scapel marks/nicks left in the paintwork so youd need to be aware of that

Yeah, I've gone right off the idea now. Sellers here tend to be lying, thieving schysters, so I won't take that risk.

There's a chap who contributes to a car magazine who did this with his GTR and he swears by it. Changed the colour of the car and protected it from stone chips. I believe he's taken it off without any issues. It wouldn't put me off a car.
