Anyone know much about car importing?

Wandering if anyone has any idea about the present cost of importing a vehicle (saloon) with a rough uk value of £2.500

From outside the EU then it's 10% import duty + 20% VAT on the cost of the car + shipping.

If it's over 10 years old then you just need to MOT and insure it and then you can get it registered (costs about £50 + road tax). If it's under 10 then you need to SVA it, which costs more and may cost a LOT more in modifications to get it through.

Sorry good point. Car would be coming from South Africa. Purchase value of around 28k rand or 2.500 pounds. Car is way over 10 years old.

It's funny I know people think the US is cluttered with perfect muscle cars but ti's not and the one that are restored or restomoded comand high prices but there were some cool cars I love the late 60's toronado's

I do, and you'd be surprised. There's a lot of cars going out of the states, but there's also a hell of a lot of people doing it, and not that much money in it unless you're doing it in volume. If you're brokering them there's even less to be made, and if you're not you need a good chunk of operating capital, which frankly if you're in any way well versed in exporting, can be put to far better uses doing other things.

I know mate - was just pulling your leg, but even getting a half decent pony that needs some tlc is easier as they just don't survive over here and there weren't that many this side of the Atlantic to begin with.

Almost correct, it's 10% import duty on the purchase price and shipping then 20% vat on the total of that.

Your guess would be completely wrong. I was originally looking at an alfa gt junior stepnose however resto would have cost more than you can buy one for so i have seen another car not an alfa which is even older and i think looks really cool.
Has it appears very little resto required if at all. At the mo just testing the waters to see costs and then will look at whether its worth buying and importing.
