Beat this: £3k estate "keeper"

SWMBO needs an estate that can (occasionally) fit 3 kids in sprog seats across the back seat, she wants to keep it forever and doesn't do many miles, most of which will be short journeys.

Not exactly an estate, but have you considered a Renault VelSatis or even a rare Avantime?
The current Mrs BB loved the VelSatis we had briefly (2 weeks as a hire car), seating position was nice and high, great visibility, interior space was massive...
Either the 3.0 V6 Diesel (post 60k belt change service) or the 3.5 V6 Petrol (think it is chain driven cams) would be a funky alternative to a Mondeo (although I know that the Mondeo is a good steer, reliable, big, blah, blah, blah.).
I'd suggest a SAAB 9-5 Aero but you would be border line for a 1/2 decent pre-dame edna at that money, so probably not.

That said, I'd personally rather have a Jaguar X-Type over the Ford. Partly because, well it's a "Jag". And I much prefer the wood and leather of the Jag too. The X-Type should be quieter and more refined as well.

That said, I'd personally rather have a Jaguar X-Type over the Ford. Partly because, well it's a "Jag". And I much prefer the wood and leather of the Jag too. The X-Type should be quieter and more refined as well.
The jag is also 4WD which must be reassuring if your whole family are in the car.
With three ankle biters in car seats, my wife's biggest priority is separating the little blighters. Hence the 7-seater shed in the driveway.
I'd love something more conventional like a large estate, but our recent 3 week road trip in the US with a 300D showed me that we need at least to keep the older two out of reach of the 2yr old.

I used to have a 2002 2.5 Zetec Mondeo saloon. I bought it as a practical cheap family car. The front near side suspention coil snapped twice and I had to have the rear subframe bushes replaced (common job on these) at £400. They had to drop the back end of the car to do it. It wasn't a bad car, just a bit of a false economy (you buy cheap but spend more when you have them.)
