Just seen this, up until now this technology has been retained from the 5 series so those with bigger families who are eligable to co cars choose this car.
It is clearly the obvious choice in that class of car due to the materially lower BIK tax vs all of the competition. You would need very strong reasons to be choosing say an Audi/Merc/Jag over this.
Add in Pro Nav, Leather and its a fantastic all round car
The 320d ED does a great job delivering incredible genuine MPG without any real downside vs the equivalent.
Sure as a private buyer its not cheap but this is designed as a Co car.

If anything the ED bits make it a nicer drive - lowered, but not sports suspension and relatively narrow high profile NON-runflat tyres means you have a car with decent turn in, minimal roll AND a decent ride. Great real world car. Nice to see £0 on the first year tax disc too.

Good stats indeed, but they're still as dull as dishwater. (IMHO of course)Interesting to see the economy of the new XF 4 cylinder once September comes.
I've just ordered a 4 cyl XF for my Sales Manager. He said there was no comparison in his eyes between the two and pleaded for the Jag. He'll be sitting in it for 40k PA and i do suspect he'll be more relaxed walking into a meeting after a 200 mile drive in the Jag rather than the Beemer.

If you do big miles then it's an impressive tool. Can't say I'm massively fussed on them though as something to own. Diesels are like boobs on a man. No matter how good they are, I'm still not really interested

Seriously though, I'd never had a diesel before until all this drive by wire laggy throttle crap started, and BMW are as guilty as anyone. BMW diesels don't really suffer from it, so I actually ended up buying one, and have never looked back. Sure, I miss the sound, nicer characteristics, lighter weight and hell, pretty much everything, about the BMW 3 litre straight six, but the fact that it appeared to be controlled by an 086 running Windows 3.1 ruined it completely. It was a work of art viewed through a blindfold. The turbocharged engines of late have made the problem even worse.
I think Car magazine has a new shape 520d as a long termer. iirc they noted that the car was gutless with the 2.0 diesel engine. imho such a large car with such a small engine is always going to feel gutless.
My manager has a 520d with the 8 speed auto (in black). fuel consumption is about the same as his old company car (passat 2.0TDI) 39/40mpg. That is mostly motorway driving. i'm sure the manual would get high 40s even 50mpg.
It does look nice though.

What is it with these types of car putting odd alloys on them...
Aerodynamics apparently. The 320ED wheels are unique directional jobs too.
I've had plenty of 520d Tourers as courtesy cars.
They are certainly not left wanting. It's never going to be a high-performer, nor a track weapon. But for a daily hack...it has more than enough grunt.
I'd never chose one, but I have plenty of clients who have opted for highly-specc'd F10 520d M-Sports company cars to replace 530ds/A6s/XFs/etc and not one has complained.

A claimed 63 mpg
What will it actually do in the real world though?
Mid 50's at a guess, which is still impressive for such a big car - But can you really see a middle manager in one?
Well we can only go by the 320d ED and that officially has a 69mpg combined. What will it actually do in the real world though?

Owners do state into 70;s and mid to high 70's wasnt a problem to get.
In fact an owner on here had an Auto version of it and did A & B road for a trip (not aiming for economy) and he easily averaged 74mpg....
The old 520d M Sport Auto car took down to the south of France with a Prius. Speed was 85mph on the Auto routes and driving was normal not tryingto get eco stats. That achieved high 50's.
So the ED version of a totally newer and higher mpg base x20d will be notably higher.

That must mean that the 520i is feable - or not enough power to pull the skin off of custard....My manager has a 520d with the 8 speed auto (in black). fuel consumption is about the same as his old company car (passat 2.0TDI) 39/40mpg. With the new 8 speed auto they rev so low in 8th gear c1,100rpm crazy low revs & of course super economy. Im guessing your manager isnt driving it for economy or infact he is driving it hard.
