Cool car for £2k

Sometime next year i'll be looking to spend around £6 to 7k on a reasonable car, but i've got an itch that needs scratching to change my current 54 plate Focus for something a little more interesting.

I'm looking for suggestions on something a little different/quirky/rare/cool, that i can run for about 12 months withou losing too much through depreciation.

My criteria is:

1. Not an MX5 (ex wife had one and i couldn't live one as a daily driver)
2. At least 4 seats
3. No bigger than 3.0 litre engine
4. Not necessarily a head turner, but something that car enthusiasts may give a little nod to

My ideas so far are E30 BMW, Saab 900, 306 GTI/Rallye, original Mini, Audi Coupe, Mk 2 Golf GTI.

All comments and suggestions welcome, i know you all love a 'what car' thread.

If you can't live with an mx5 then you have no chance with an origibal kibi, they're very crampt noisy and unconfortable. Plus rust is a major issue on these cars. Great fun though. Personally of stock with the E36 BMW

Volvo S80 T6 - quite rare and quite quick and a bargain is the one that keeps getting my attention at the moment. 2.9 litre twin turbo. 268 horses

for that budget you will find one that has not been to the moon and back also, unlike some of your other choices.

I'd hate to disagree but you'll pay millions to insure it and it's a non-turbo. Thus slow. And everyone will try to race you and you'll be embarassed.

As soon as I saw you'd thought about an Audi Coupé, I thought, why not get a car that has exactly the same underpinnings, but more doors and is actually lighter?



But then I realised your reason was quirky/unusual. Depends on your definitions, I guess. For me, my car's very unusual (due to my age) and I don't see any others that have been looked after / made to look good. Plus, £2k gets you a good 2.8 30v and they don't hang around. And you can feel like the Transporter

ETA - If you buy a dirty one and sell it clean, you'll make money on it too. Which is handy!

But it depends on whether an A4, whatever caveat, really comes under your idea of "quirky"!

If not, I'd say Fiat Coupe 20vT as well.

Don't get me wrong it's far from perfect but for £2k and you are right though insurance would be astronomical! But I think alot of enjoyment could be had here - hence my hilarious (IMO) if not entirely inapropriate simile!
