New Banger Advice

My girlfriend finally finding a job after finishing university has prompted the need for 2 cars.
The amount of mileage that I cover DJ'n had meant that I hadn't been able to have anything pistonheads worthy for a while, but now having two cars means I can have finally have some fun again.
We're planning on spending around £8k on the fun car and max £1-1.5k on the shed.
My girlfriend loves Golfs and has her heart set on a Mk4 R32 or Mk5 GTi. I like the thought of a DC-5 Integra.
For the banger I do about 500 miles a week travelling from Newcastle to gigs in Manchester, Leeds but will soon be going to Hull and Lincoln weekly.
(I know I could use trains but its currently £38 in diesel versus a £60 advance ticket and i'd have to wait until 6am for the first train home in most cities)
I need something thats comfortable on the motorway, is good on fuel and is ok to sleep in (for stops in service stations).
My mates have told me to look at Pug 306 D-turbos and Mk4 Golf GT TDi's
I'm currently using an Audi A2 1.4TDi and i'm inclined to just keep using it. But its not the best car on motorways.
Most probably not going to buy until September (as i'm always off in the Summer) but i thought it'd be nice to have something to look forward to and wanted to start looking now.
As ever I leave myself in your capable hands and am prepared to be lambasted for not getting an MX-5 or something RWD.
But if it helps i've already owned the obligatory Puma

An important variable is how much kit do you need to carry with you for DJing, are you a sort who turns up with a laptop or a full blown PA system and a huge record box?
For the money the mk4 golf TDIs (plus variants like seat leons/Audi A4) will be great for MPG but potentially there can be a few big bills which can effect these cars. The 306TDI or perhaps HDI is also a sound car an good choice
The biggest potential problem with circa 10 year old diesels is the potential for fuel pump/injector failure which can (as recently proved by my own car) write a car off. Circa £2k for a fuel pump on a Y2k Saab 93 meant it was binned after 195k of relatively trouble free miles, id still recommend one though!

An estate version of the 306 diesel would be good. I've got a ZX estate (essentially the same) and it's lovely on the motorway, plenty of space for kit (even if you don't need it for work, a shed might as well be as practical as poss) and probably nice enough to sleep in. Slow n/a model but a turbo version would be more than adequate. Should do 50+mpg if it's mainly motorway miles. If it's got a bosch pump it should be fine to run on veg oil. Mine cost £425
