Do you trust 'performance' air filters?

I can't make up my mind about lower density foam filters. Logic says they can't filter as well? Am I harming my bike if I run one? Cheers all.

Ran one on my xjr for years without the slightest problem, think the word `performance` is a bit of a joke on it`s own, it needs either some free flowing cans or a complete system to get the most from it. Run Predator cans on mine, sounds awesome but build quality ain`t the best.

Never had any problems running cotton filters, can't comment on gauze or foam though.

I have used quite a few of them and I wouldnt use anything else but K&N drop in filters. Cant say I have noticed a "power" increase but it does seem to make the engine feel smoother in my opinion

It depends on the vehicle- on my Saab it would be a waste of time as the standard filter would supply all the air the car would ever need; I wouldn't trust it near my SLK because I've heard some horror stories & I'm paranoid. I don't put on on my Blackbird for similar reasons, even though a low density foam filters worked fine on a few smaller bikes I had.

I've just put a K&N cone filter on a Hyundai coupe 2.7 and it's made a dramatic difference due to how crappy the standard system is.

As for whether I trust it, I accept that they can easily be over-oiled unless great care is taken. Just put it on as it comes out of the box & this shouldn't be a problem.

The other issue is whether the filter is coarser to allow more air & consequently more crap through. It can filter as well but give more air if it has a greater surface area- this is where a larger than standard system yields benefits.

In short, it can be trusted if care is taken & can give performance benefits on SOME vehicles.

I have used both replacement filters and cold air induction kits and never suffered any problems. Has anyone actually knackered their engine after fitting a replacement filter??????

I've always changed my filter for K&N replacement filter. Never had any probs, don't know about power increase but as others have said just feels a bit smoother/better throttle response.

Cone style induction kits are largely a waste of time unless they are completely shielded from underbonnet engine heat. All they do is suck in hot air and increase IAT, lowering engine power. They sound good though.

Replacement panel filters however will at least pay for themselves after a few services!
