Bypassing Solenoid on Starter

Mk5 GTI - 56 plate.

Follow on from my previous thread citing starting troubles - battery is fine so I suspect dodgy solenoid.

I've heard you can bypass the solenoid to test if this is the issue - any advice on how to do this?

(I understand anything that I do here needs to be done using insulated tools)

On ye olde starter motors you could bridge the point where power goes to the solenoid and where the power goes from the solenoid to the motor. I've not done it on anything less than about 20 years old though. You will have to take it off first, anyway.

Even if it is the solenoid, you won't be able to get parts to fix it.

I was hoping I could clean up the contacts within the solenoid - guessing that isn't going to get me far?

You might get away with it, but if you need to replace anything you have to buy a whole starter motor.

Just for those interested - changed the starter motor and it fixed the problem.
