'quality' family hatchback ?

Getting close to the time to replace my car, and I'm struggling to think of what to go with next.
I want a Mondeo sized car as the kids are getting bigger, something around five years old and it must be a hatchback. My ideal choice would be another Honda (I've a 98 Civic VTI that I've has since it was five years old) but the Accord is not a hatchback and I realy don't need an estate.
I'm strugling to think of a well built, as in I buy it at five years old and look after it so it lasts me to ten years or more, car that matches the above.
For me the Mazda 6 is an option, but long term I don't see it as being better than a Mondeo (other than the looks and handling).
I just can't think of a German or Japanese car that fits the above spec ?. Not fussed if it's petrol or diesel, or about performance as I'm in a new job with a commute that's just a short motorway cruise (so no more nice twisty country roads and overtaking opportunities
).

If there is not enought rear leg room for you in the Octavia VRS then the A4 in any form is not any better. The A4 B5,B6 and B7 are pitiful on rear leg room and it's only the B8 (fourth gen 2008->) that really gives you the extra leg room in front and rear and that's because the chassis is a good 7 in longer.Why can't there just be an Accord or A4 hatchback, then I'd be happy.

A 2005 onwards Passat Estate is about the biggest in it's class for load space and rear leg room so I'd go for one of those if I were you. Get an Estate if you want something similar to a hatch for loading as the Saloon loading can be a pita.
Ok I'll bite, why does it hVe to be a hatchback? Why not a saloon or estate?
I like my wife's seat altea. Well screwed together and my 6'5" friend (and since this is pistonheads, yes he is powerfully built, no he doesn't have a goatee) fits in the back with absolute ease.
Boot is pretty good too, fitted 2 suitcases and overnight bags perfectly well.

Problem is as soon as you say hatchback you are limiting the size of the car e.g Golf, Auris, Civic, Focus etc.... They are crap on legroom when compared to even the VRS which you mention as being lacking in the leg room department.
The saloon options are better than the small hatches mentioned above but still limit you to the likes of Mundano, Mazda 6, Insignia, Skoda Superb (split tailgate),Avensis, Accord etc....
