Good cars top gear have destroyed.

Top Gear are always breaking stuff, and usually it is rubbish/old/fit for scrap. However every now and then they destroy something, and it makes you a little sad to see because perhaps you would quite liked to have owned that car.

Anyone who has seen the latest series of top gear will probably have guessed it was their car park stunt with the marauder vs. an alfa 156 and renault of some kind (safrane?) in episode one that had got me thinking about this, and there are actually loads of nice cars that have sadly met their end at the hands of Top gear and/or Jeremy Clarkson.

so what are the cars whose destruction has made you think 'bds' more than any other?



ETA: no the Bentley Mulsanne doesnt count

Well that's a Megane sedan or something to that effect, so no great loss to motoring... and the 156 I'm willing to bet was bought for peanuts so probably ropey as anything. The production crew just needed something for the big truck thing to run over, so I'm sure they went to buy the cheapest cars on offer in the country for the stunt - it's not like they spent a month umming and ahhing over it trying to find the best example they could get for the money or anything. They may not have even been runners!

Let's face it, they're hardly classic motors are they.

Cutting open the Lotus Excel roof hurt a bit but the alleged assisted destruction of the cheap Italian supercars caused a kerfuffle in some Lambo circles.

Well no, and perhaps its just because I'm poverty stricken and only just able to keep my battered old 106 on the road, but I would love something half decent like an alfa 156. Even a ropey one.

and this thread wasnt about the alfa specifically, it was just that particular act of wanton vehicular destruction that got me thinking about all the decent cars TG have destroyed.

also, whoever mentioned scrapyards; you wouldnt think it a shame to see a nice car sat in the scrapyard waiting to be cubed?

Looking at that picture the 156 was a Selespeed, so was almost certainly knackered.

A chap I work (who is from Saouth Africa) with said that the two cars would have been worth a fair bit in South Africa. I not sure what the value would have been so am unable to comment.

I can't even watch the episode a couple of years ago when Clarkson trashes a brand new Renaultsport Twingo. I even wrote a letter of complaint to the BBC and I have never done that before. Dropping a piano on a Morris Marina is fine by me but ruining a brand new car is unforgiveable. Perhaps I'm just getting old.

I always thought that we live in a free country and I can to do whatever I want to my belongings?

You should object every time you see somebody smoking, that will cost you much more in NHS bills than somebody destroying their own car.

Or do we have to repeat - TG IS PROFITABLE

Just because they can afford it doesn't mean it's right. How many people might have been delighted to take that car off their hands. But I tell you what - if you want to invite me over to watch you trash your property I'm there.

I suspect the cars that top gear destroy are probably in less than perfectly saleable condition, they may be insurance write offs, seized vehicles or otherwise not likely to go back on the road as it would take a massive effort.

I've been told that the Twingo he road tested was a pre production variant that couldn't be sold to the general public, because of tax reasons? The car would have had to be crushed later on.

Similar to the evo that got destroyed, it was destined for the crusher anyway, Top Gear just got some fun out of it.
