Top Gear presenters Positve Camber confusion.

How can all 3 TG presenters be so ignorant as to think that Positive Camber is when the bottom of the wheel is further out than the top. ??? I thought these guys were reasonably knowledgeable about cars. After all, this is a fundamental of car design. I was surprised that no one at TG failed to spot the gaffe. I would have thought the TG phone would be ringing off the hook with all the calls to say what a gaffe this was. What's the betting something gets said about it tomorrow ?. I know the show's recorded but there must have been loads of people in the studio who were willing to put Jezza, Hamster and Slow right. !!!

I thought positive camber was what you described, negative being where the top is further out than the bottom of the wheel?

I thought negative was where the bottom sticks out more than the top. I dont know though, either way it wouldn't be the first time TG got something wrong so i wouldn't worry. :b

Yep, they were all wrong. Negative = top leaning inward, exaggerated on certain track cars as it gives better handling. Nearly all high performance road cars run a little negative camber both front and rear - usually around 1 degree, give or take.

When I saw last week's show and the remarks about camber I thought "I bet they'll all be commenting about that on PH". I was suprised to find no mention of it in the ongoing TG thread, just the usual sad ogling of the women standing behind the presenters.

negative camber is where the top of the wheel is further in than the bottom, positive is where the top of the wheel is further out than the bottom of the wheel, just look at 2cvs these had comedy positive camber on their front wheels, mercs steering/suspension geometry is set up in such a way that on full lock they give loads of positive camber

Arf arf. I have no illusions about TG. It's my favourite show. I've driven the Test Track and fondled the TG limos, and that Espace ragtop.

The beetle is down to the suspension geometry, the more you lower it the more negative it gets, thats a very extreme example!

Ahhhhh as said above, I'm glad this has come up in PH, I was watching last week at my 'spanner sense' twinged as Hammond said this, I was unsure as they all seemed to be nodding away in agreement. I can sleep well again.
