Does anyone use Auto's for drifting ?

As per the question really, does anyone that does the drift type events use an automatic vehicle, fancy a 540i and most are auto, can you do the drifty thing convincingly with an auto ?

I've never driven an auto, but I assume you can leave it in second gear in most cars.

I imagine not very well.

dropping the clutch is used for breaking traction and so on.

No. You can powerslide it - yes. Will it be a convincing drift, as in controllable through few corners - no.

Plus 540 are really heavy barges with recirculating ball steering which makes it much less fun to drift than some other nimbler BMWs. With standard suspension they understeer a lot too.

And to make things even worse - only M5s came with LSD...

Theres a guy on Driftworks who did a few rounds (Or maybe a seasion) of the BDC in an auto Silvia S14, have a search on the Driftworks site.

On the E39 the gearbox is a steptronic, so you can get it to hold any gear you like but over rev it and it changes up.
