One thing with the 850i and cl600 v12's you'd be lucky to get 15mpg. That Nissan would do what 50mpg?
Ved £30 v up to £400pa.

Um - nope I dot agree with any of the above but I wouldn't get a V12 that's too far the other way but somewhere in the middle.
Take my own situation I bought my 330d used at 3 years old for c50% of it's new price or I could of maybe had a 1.4 Golf brand new for the same money. Which is better... Um they don't compare at all the BMW is miles better.
Also I'd say the majority of pistonheaders do this anyway buying older cars get more bang for your £. So sadly top gear could have caused these gems to be snapped up by the millions of other drivers. But V12 ownership cannot be taken lightly when it goes wrong it really goes wrong with costs many thousands whereas that nissan just couldn't have such large repair costs

Yes annual miles are key. I'm currently doing 16-18k and that's going to go up to 30-35k from next year... V12 and that doesn't work.
I do love a v12 though the ultimate engine configuration of perfect balance.

My FIL traded in his year old base spec fiesta (even no alloys!) for a brand new base spec fiesta (still with no alloys) as (and I quote) he "wanted a car that would last him out." He's only 66 for gawd's sake, and what difference is a year going to make? He could feasibly live another 25 or so years! When the mrs asked him to justify it, he said "Its got a blue tooth and an ipod thing". He doesn't own an ipod and has never used Bluetooth in his life. Plus he traded in a rather fetching metallic blue for a car in dull boring silver. His ultimate dream garage consists of a Ford Focus... I asked him why he didn't just buy a year old Focus and he replied "New cars are better..."
I guess he's just poured away 2 or 3 thousand in depreciation over the year he owned the blue fiesta. Maybe that top gear bit might show people how silly it is to have the attitude of "New cars are always better."

I get paid more commission on used cars than new

Until you give the wife the keys to nip to the local multi-storey carpark. You'll need new bumpers every week. Little cars are perfect for around town - I drive a Panda 100HP for this very reason - if I'm around Wycombe I use the Panda.
