What really cheap to run car? 1000-1500

I'm thinking of changing my car in a couple of months. I've got a motorbike for fun. I currently drive a hatefully slow clio 1.2 that does 45mpg average.

Any ideas on what to get? I was thinking of a 1.5d clio. Probably still hatefully slow but about 65mpg and £100 cheaper to tax.
Oddly, if you go off AT figures (which were pretty accurate for my current car) the 80bhp is slightly more economical than the 65bhp version, but a bit more expensive to buy.
My current car is about as basic as I want to go as I do about 15k a year (So no 106 diesels)

Yep Clio DCi sounds about perfect! No complaints with mine, a 65 with pretty high mileage for year. Still pulls well (as well as it can) and like all Clios they are still fun to chuck about...

It's a more comfortable thing. I've done big miles in a basic 106 and, well, it was pretty horrible. The Clio is just about big enough and comfy enough to work

That's exactly it. You're never going to get 7-series levels of comfort in either, I accept that, but compared to each other I found the clio had the edge in long-drive comfort for when I'm visiting family 2.5-3 hours away or on the motorway to work. Just a slightly nicer place to be.
