Anyone ever buy part worn tyres?

A bargain or a dangerous false economy?

I bought a 2nd hand car once, the tyres on it had been used. Does this count?

I certainly wouldn't out of choice but as above I've bought a second hand car - as long as the tyres are of decent quality and have enough tread on them, then all is well (for example on a TVR I change them at 2.5mm).

Won a wheel and tyre with an Excellent Goodyear tyre for 23quid off Ebay. I make a habit of this and now have a glut of transit wheels.(I collect em from sellers whilst travelling about in the course of my work).All with quality tyres on....Save me fortunes!!

Yes but I reckon it's a false economy.

Interestingly I've seen an increase in part worn winter tyres. The tread depths are usually 4mm which is a big as they start new with 8/10mm and don't work properly at 50% wear. They should be banned from selling them.

I did when I was a poor student and didn't do many miles and was driving a 1L car I seem to recall they were V Cheap. Needs must and all that, im still here to tell the tale.

pretty much everywhere is quoting between 40 - 45 quid per tyre new.

One place offered used with minimum 4mm @ £20

Scrapyard, £10 for a tyre with next to no wear. Plus a new (well "new") rim. Nowt wrong with it if all you need is a legal tyre.

local place sells them with over 6mm tread only. They get them from Germany, apparently in a container load.Wife was a driving instructor and front tyres would last 5k miles a go, through kerbing etc ( however hard she tried to steer the car away from the kerb, apparently blokes were worse!!) , so £20 a hit fitted or £65 a hit new and both last the same time a no brainer really. Always decent make of tyres too. Another mate has a shed scooby estate. Tank of fuel doubles its value. Cant see why he would want to spend £150 on a pair of nangkangs , when he can get a pair of pirellis for £50 fitted...............

Generally buy new ones but put two Michelins on the back of my car as I hardly use it and it already had too much spent on it that month.

I think part worns are fine, better than new budget tyres, like has been said, so you throw all 4 tyres away when you buy a secondhand car, they may well be off another car, I have yet to have any issue with a part worn but have had issues with brand new cheapies.

I don't know what people think happens to these tyres, some sinister and deviant process to make them less safe, someone was pontificating at work about how they always buy top brand OE tyres, I confirmed this with a cursory glance at the tyres on their car and sure enough, Bridgestones, but he had run them right onto the wear bars.

Has anyone got any cautionary tales about the dangers of part worns or is it just that its a bit

I read on the internet that in Germany a car dealer has to fit new Tyres to a used car before they sell it? So alot of pre-worn Tyres come from there and there's nowt wrong with them!

I've never heard that before. Most of them do come from Germany though. AFAIK the legal tyre depth over there is 3mm whereas ours is 1.6mm, so even their "done" tyres would pass as OK here. They also have to change their tyres over Winter and back again when the weather warms up.
