Tank slapper – new one for me, probably only stumbled across it this calendar year. Love the phrase.

Bargetastic – fanbloodytastic morelike, as I hope to get into a 7-10 year old barge later this year. The more German the better.

A hoon. What exactly is a hoon?

What motoring phrases/ terms do you like/ find amusing? Or take a dislike to?

I like the following;

dab of oppo - pretty self explanatory

if in doubt, drop a cog and floor it - again, self explanatory

oxo tower - erm, it appears on a motoring site a lot

"Straight to the scene of the accident"
"Pedal on the right"
"She..."

Hates
"Clarkson says... [anything]" (Note, I like many Clarksonisms. I dislike people parroting what he may have said in the hope that it will make them sound knowledgeable.)
"That's a gay car" (Grow up.)
"Slippy Diff" (er... by definition it's a non-slippy diff).

On that note I hate it when James May uses the same terminology for his difficulty when driving almost anything, just doesn't really apply to anything with 4 wheels.

Also dislike the use of 'Sport' as it has become to mean the car is generally not sporty in anyway and usually just has alloys and a slightly above basic trim.

Like 'backwards entry' as deep down I'm 11 years old and this combined with lots of smoke equals entertainment for me.

I love how Martin Brundle invented about half of those.

It grinds my gears when people call Subarus "Scccooooobies"!

And when people call Nurburgring "Nurenburg".

I've always thought that "Tank slapper" was a biking term that doesn't really work very well when applied to four-wheeled activities.

Also , when people call Reliant Robins "Robin Reliants", nobody says "Mondeo Ford", or "Astra Vauxhall", so why get it wrong with the Reliant?

One that I really like that just came to mind is the line from the song Radar Love by Golden Earing "It's half past four and I'm shifting gear...".

"Four on the floor" has always sounded very cool to me too, as does "Four barrel double pumper Holley...", oooooohhh!

There is no real reason for me disliking the following but I really hate some car names being either changed or shortened:

Beemer - Hate - prefer Bee-Em for some reason

Min - Hate - prefer - Mini

Dub - Hate - prefer VW or even Vee-Dub

Zorst - chavvy!

Hate people who call Volvo's Vulvas or ovlovs

teggy - hate - prefer integra

Fezza - Hate - prefer ferrari

Scooby (as mentioned previously) - too chavvy

Pug - prefer peugeot

Yet I don't mind

Merc, Alfa, Jag, Lambo, Mazzer,Cossie,

I also think it's a bit lame when people use the model/chassis code when talking about their cars in general - e.g. "I drive an E39 525i" or "I drive a W201 190e" I especially hate people who describe modern Volvo's with the body code e.g. "I've a Volvo 855 estate"

Man, I need to get out more - preferably in my E39 beemer 5 series with a stainless zorst

I like almost all the things Charlie Cox says.

Also, tankslapper is perfectly applicable to a four wheel vehicle - it's when a car starts fishtailing uncontrollably, often to end in disaster.

I also like understatement:

'I was proceeding at pace', 'somewhat over-cooked it', 'stopped smartly' etc.

Dislike
Clarkson - Torques, poo shoots (1M Coupe - hope it doesn't become a habit)
C.Harris - Skids

Like - most things M.Brundle says, he should be on a car show of some sort (apart from F1)

I think a tannslapper is when you get a speed wobble on a motorbike, so your legs start slapping the fuel tank, or vice-versa. See video above.

It would be quite some accident to make your legs slap the fuel tank in a car...

I hate all the different names for traction control - ESP, DSC, DTC, PSM, POS etc.

Although this may be to do with the fact that on a dozy Monday morning I spent a good few minutes looking for the traction control button in a works car, only to find out it was a damn picture of a car laying some elevenses. Whoops.

I always thought it meant the handlebars are moving side to side so violently that they almost hit the petrol tank. like this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvHtChodNk0
Doesn't apply to cars at all IMO.
