Today's 'What Car' - forty grand

I’ve got a relative who’s looking to treat himself to a new car for his birthday. I told him I’d seek some inspiration from the PH mob to help out.
Here’s the criteria:
1) Budget of £40k (including room for haggling so let’s say advertised at £45k absolute maximum)
2) The car MUST BE BRAND NEW or delivery miles only – essential criteria
3) No two seaters, but coupes, hatches or saloons are all OK
4) Absolutely no diesels
5) Manual or auto
6) Needs to be fast and good to drive
7) To be driven around 5-10k p/a on all roads
I know that you can get more for your money used but this car will be a keeper and the purchaser wants the new car experience. He will not budge on this. Current steed is a Mk5 Golf GTI that will be going.
I'm a bit stuck as I tend to buy older cars. What do you think?

Quality as in damped grab handles and decent showroom coffee, or a reliable well engineered car?How about a good spec C-Class coupe?

If he's keeping it for a long time it should age well, and a 10-15 y.o. one owner car will be easy to sell on when the time comes.
A C350 coupe auto (306bhp!) come in around £36k, leaving a bit for some extras, or a nice holiday.
Your chap sounds like a fairly regular sort of fella, with a reasonable set of wants. The C-class is handsome, well-built (ish), new and moderately eye-catching.
