Currently insuring an MR2 Turbo with a massive list of mods for under £900.

Can I get a quote online for under £1500 on an E46 320 or 330D? Can I hell! What's that all about?

29years old, male, 4 years' no claims, 6 points.

Tossers, the lot of them. Comparison sites always suck, but these prices make me think the substantially cheaper insurance I had in mind for the Beemer may not materialise, thus removing a percentage of my reasoning for changing to such a car....

I'm currently with Flux, and obviously being a modified specialist, my underwriter may not be favourable on a change to a "normal" car. Going to have to ring up and find out.....

Flux wanted £1500 to insure a £300 astra I bought to do tip runs.

Aparently they dont do non modified cars.

And since their renewal was more expensive this year and the APR was 43% they now dont do my modified car either!

If there's nothing unusual about your car/your driving history - ignore the brokers and go straight to the big-league insurers like Direct Line/Meerkats/GofkyourselfCompare...

They cater only for mainstream drivers, limited convictions/points, unmodified cars but they are VASTLY cheaper than anything a broker will dig-up (brokers expect to make at least 10-15% of your premium and so don't even look at the mainstreams because there's nothing like that sort of margin available to them).

Example:
Best price from a broker for my current 'shed' 405 Estate - £590. Meerkats got that down to £380. Direct Line £270.

YMMV

I was with them last year, when I paid a one off payment. This year I've looked at quotes for monthly payments and although the quote was nearly £100 cheaper through Adrian Flux than the next best quote I had, the crazy APR meant I'd actually be paying nearly £100 more than that quote over the year, so I went elsewhere.

Careful though - you get what you pay for. The big direct insurers also enjoy disputing claims.

I insure my cars through a broker. And when my car was vandalised, the broker were completely brilliant in getting it sorted out (A-Plan, in case anyone's interested - amazing service when I actually had to use my insurance).

Although £1500 for a 3 series is ridiculous.

currently im picking numbers out the hat as i call it on my 3 series.

below are all the same details on each site as they use pretty much identical forms.

money supermarket > elephant > 970
compare the market > elephant > 695
go compare > elephant > 720
elephant direct > 1080

how can a company change so dramatically site to site? its literally just making up numbers as i go along, differing 400 pounds depending on what site i went to with the same details.
my view should be the current system of car insurance should be scrapped and then have a fully governing body, meaning fair insurance rather than companies being allowed to charge what they want. yes it will mean alot of jobs will go, but i have no sympathy for insurance companies.

try http://www.skyinsurance.co.uk/

Worth joining the MR2 owners club (if you haven't already) as they will give you a substantial discount if you're a member.

IMO BMW's seem more expensive to insure than other cars with a similar group rating.

I'm 25 with 4years NCB, 3 points and no accidents. I couldn't get a sensible quote for a 330d or 530d and a 320d or 525tds was still coming out around £1500.... That is third party fire and theft btw.

It's just a joke. Gonna ring Flux today and find out their take.

Perhaps they will be happier to insure one with a remap and a set of Eibach lowering springs than they would a standard car biggrin

I always wonder if cars that are expensive to insure are bought by chavs and scrotes more often.

It seems odd that an MR2 Turbo with an ability to find hedges would be cheaper to insure than a relatively conservative Diesel saloon car.

Probably. The MR2 is often a bit cheaper than other similarly powered cars. I think it flies below the chav radar to a degree. They can't get all their mates/sprogs in biggrin

+1 for A-Plan

Although they can be bettered by the comparison sites but not by much in my case, hence I have stayed with them for over 5 years now.

I always look elsewhere come renewal time and they do work on lowering the renewal quote plus they pick up the phone straight away.

Oh! and they don't load me for a non-fault claim unlike the ones on the comparison sites.
