My dad used to randomly quiz me to give the colour of the car behind (without looking) to get me into the habit of checking my rear-view regularly. It stuck, I can still do it today.

reading the road can give you momentum. if you don't have power, this is useful.

treat others as though there's a price on your head, but never take it personally.

Oh nearly forgot the best one and it is really corny,many years ago i watched "Days of Thunder" the day after i was competing at Thruxton in the CCC handicap race that ran alongside the Speed championship.During practice out the back of the circuit i let a very fast Sierra Cosworth pass me on the inside(Lesley Beerling was the driver as i recall)as he passed me he lost it and span right in front of me at high speed,loads of smoke ensued and i poo'ed myself,all i could think of was the advice given to Mr Cruise in the film "head for the smoke 'cos the car will be gone when you get there".I can say it works.

Doesn't that depend on whether the speed you consider reasonable under the circumstances is above or below the speed limit? The fact that you are going to ignore the speed limit in choosing an appropriate speed doesn't necessarily mean that you will exceed it...
