My mum currently drives a Discovery 3 auto which she has had since new and a suzuki swift (bought because she thought it would save her money to run a small car as well...)
Her discovery has been a great car but has now done quite a high mileage and has developed a few electrical gremlins so she now wants to sell both cars and buy one newer car for all occasions. Her budget will about around £18k.
Her requirements are that it must tow a horse box with two horses (approx 2000kg) it cant be 'too' long for parking (she has already ruled out pickup trucks) and if possible it must be able to do 30mpg+ (the discovery auto is quite heavy on fuel).
It doesn't need to be fully fledged mud plugger, it just has to be able to pull a trailer across a damp field.
She is currently thinking about a short wheel base shogun, although well specced manuals appear to be as rare as hens teeth.
Other 4x4s I have been thinking of suggesting are the Mercedes M class, Audi Allroad and XC 90 (all 07+). I have also considered the rx400h as a bit of a wildcard choice.
Anyone have any experience with these 4x4s or have any other good suggestions?

VW Toureg? One of relatively few that does the 3500kg tow.
Quick skim on Autotrader shows 3 litre diesels on 56 plates, ~30k miles (inc 1 from main dealer) at around £14k.
Driven carefully they'll get close to 30mpg but will definitely perform on the towing trailers across fields. Only thing Mrs LT would change hers for would be a FFRR.
