replacing my first car. help!

Ive been driving my 1.0 yaris for around 4 years now and i think its time for a upgrade all though in these 4 years not once ive had to take it to a garage for any repairs and has been a very nice n cheap car to run but im really struggling for upgrade options, looking to get out of the typical first car hatchbacks but on the other hand i need a economical car and one with cheap insurance as im paying 1k for the yaris and i have also long commute to uni everyday.

i went down the nice german hatchback route (audi a3) was quoted close to 3k and 1.8 on a mini cooper. i got a bit desperate and started looking at smarts

MX5. RWD, economical, cheap to run, and from what I've read on here cheap to insure. On top of that lots of roof down fun.

Might as well get the best of all worlds.

I rather liked my yaris 1.0, friend with an a3 found it dull as hell. You'll find the 1.8 less involving to drive for starters.
