Currently on the hunt for an S3 and stumbled across this

Just to warn anyone thinking about the car to be cautious and always google the registration to see what comes up!

That's perfectly reasonable. It will only be on the HPI register if it was written off as a total loss by the insurance company. If it was found fairly quickly, that might not have happened.

I thought as soon as it's recovered it would have the marker on the HPI check saying 'Stolen recovered' ?

It probably will be HPI clear and the dealer is probably totally unaware of its past.

He will be likely to have bought it at auction, as a px, or from another dealer.

No, cars only go onto the HPI register if they've been written off.

No, cars only go onto the HPI register if they've been written off.

If a payout is made from the insurer it will show as stolen.

If it is subsequently recovered it will show as stolen recovered (category x)

If it was stolen and recovered by the police before the insurer paid out (eg stolen overnight and found the following day dumped) it won't show as anything other than clear, unless it is damaged and then written off.
