As some or some of you may not know the EU has been mumbling something about 'clamping down' on classic car usage for some time. From what I can remember this has been brewing now something like the last 5 to 10 years. They normally do this sort of dance with everything they know people aren't going to like so they can get a feel for how to best get what they want. i.e. testing opinion and seeing who is objecting so they know how to fight them.

Here is a letter from UKIP in response to ABD (association of British Drivers) although it is what's known as a 'stock' letter and is the same one sent to all who are enquiring about this issue. There are lots of concerned people asking UKIP the same questions, hence the stock letter and this is their opinion on the subject.

"Dear Mr

Many thanks for telling Mr Farage about these recommendations from the "International Federation of Antiquated Vehicles", which do, indeed, cast a shadow on the prospects of keeping vintage and veteran cars; so much so, in fact, that one suspects "FIVA" of having been briefed by the EU-Commission, rather than by its members, before it put forward these proposals.

I say this because the criteria mentioned would, as you point out, limit the use of cherished, historic automobiles by

(a) requiring expert-inspections (which enthusiasts would undoubtedly have to pay for) - to ensure the vehicle's "historically correct condition" - and

(b) requiring constant monitoring of the use of such a vehicle, by the police - to ensure that it was not used for "daily transport", whatever that may precisely mean.

In other words, these are hardly the kind of proposals one would expect to hear from the advocates of keeping vintage and veteran vehicles. They are what you would expect to hear from the enemies of individuality and liberty, namely the institutions of the EU.

Naturally, UKIP will oppose them, as it always does; but you must realise that, even if the EU's "parliament" were occupied entirely by UKIP-members, the EU-Commission would still have the power to introduce measures like this. It could do it under the "Ecological Design Directive", for example, through which it already has legal "competence" to make any regulations it wishes; or it could do it via a "non-legislative route" (a proposal straight to the EU-Council)

The Commission only ever puts proposals through the "parliament" when it knows they will not be opposed. If by some miracle there are amendments to such proposals, which the Commission finds inconvenient, then it can oblige the Council to vote on them by unanimity - and the Commission can always ensure, if it wishes, that the Council will not be unanimous.

All I'm saying is that, if the Commission wants to impose these conditions, it will do so. There is no genuinely democratic body standing in its way.

All I can do, therefore, is to point this out, together with its corollary: the only way to oppose the tyranny of the Commission (and its member-governments) is to cancel the EU's authority; and, in the UK, that means voting UKIP.

Yours sincerely

Andrew S. Reed

It's not a party full of saints and it is easy to ridicule UKIP but at the end of the day they are 'real' people standing because they are fed-up with what’s happened to this country. Compared with the other three parties which are infested with slime-ball establishment politicians only seeking to feather their own nests I know where I’d rather put my X.

I'm confused - what was the original letter about? And why were the ABD asking UKIP anyway?

The EU are proposing (and have been for some time) to legislate in some negative way against classic car owners. UKIP are the biggest UK anti-EU party. Think that answers both questions?

Not at all, what does 'legislate in some negative way' mean'?

They want to restrict the use of classic cars, what is considered a classic car and what you can do to your own car (modifications etc. although PH might approve of the last bit). No reason behind it, except for the usual "Its a car, and therefore evil" st afaik.

In the letter above there is an a) & b) - read those as they give you an idea of the flavour of what is being discussed.

The reason for being so vague is that the EU operates using deception to fool people into thinking they are doing them good when really they are just pursing their own agenda. We actually don't know what they are actually going to do until they've done it. At the moment all we know is what we can tell from the vague murmurings. You can go on google and read all the historic stories of what various plans have come up over the years. I think all the major newspapers will have something on it in one way or another.

I'm glad the EU are addressing the carnage and horror caused by classic cars, I can barely muster courage to leave the house such is my fear of them.

Exactly. Why bother. I can’t see any reason why that is something the EU needs to be involved in.

have still have to pay full road tax for my classic car, despite it being 27 years old & driven maybe 2,000 miles p.a, consequently delivering a virtually negligable carbon footprint over its lifetime. Give me some cost concessions on classic car usage & I would be happy to give some concessions back the other way. For as long as it is treated in the same way for taxation purposes as my every day car, Europe can F.O.

If the recommendations are followed to the letter . . . and we all know that UK authorities love to do that (apart from where it doesn’t fit in with their Orwellian agenda i.e. DNA retention by the police) then this car would not be allowed on the road and would most likely have to be broken for parts or cubed.

Wouldn't care if the EU ruled-out Chris Evans though... Actually, I would, he's a proper car nut and quite funny!

That's the big one. How are you supposed to control your population if you don't know where they are?
