Ok, if you had a maximum of £4.5k to spend on a car, what would it be?

I only do about 7000 miles a year, and need the car for a 8 mile drive to work each day. Therefore it doesn't need to be super fuel efficient, or particularly practical, but i would like something with a bit of poke. The only other thing is that i would like the car to be pretty reliable.

Cars i have been thinking about are:
E46 BMW 330i Sport Touring
E38 BMW 740i Sport
E39 BMW 530i Sport
Honda S2000
Lexus GS300 Sport
Renault Clio 182
Jaguar XJR (Although apparently i'm too young for one of these (late 20's), and i'm not sure about the reliability)
Mini Cooper S
Mercedes C43 (Insurance is too high on this)
How old do you have to be to get a Jag XK8?

Any more suggestions? What would you pick from that list?

Of your list I'd have the S2000. There's plenty of time for sensible saloons/estates when you HAVE to have them.

Before I even read your list I was thinking either Mini Cooper S or Honda S2K, so probably one of them

Jaguar XK8. Quite a few on Autotrader for the £2500-£4500 range...

In view of the crappy winters we've had and are going to get, may I suggest a 3.0L V6 engined, 4wd saloon car? 231 bhp and 0-60 in under 7 seconds, and £4500 should get an excellent 5-6 year old one.

TBH the only one on your list that jumps off the page is the clio. Although, unfashionable as it may be if it were my cash I'd be looking for a tidy mk1 mx5, and saving the other 3.5k for a supercharger and some other toys

I can't see the point in spending any more than you need to for an 8 mile commute

Yeah i know what you mean about having a fun car while i can, and most of the cars i have been looking at have been big saloon cars! However, after driving her warm hatch tonight with standard sport suspension, i remember why i tend to like big luxury cars! Rattly and harsh.

I have been thinking about 4x4 for the winter, as the last few years i have not been able to get out of the street in my RWD cars. The x-type really doesn't do it for me though, but some of them do look like bargains! Snow tyres for me this year i think!

I'm sure most people spend far more than this for shorter journeys! I should have pointed out that this is my only car, not just my commute car.

Some of the XK8s do look nice, it is an old mans car though, my dad would be jealous!

Now you see, this kind of thing pisses me off a bit. For years and years Jaguar have been kicking BMW's, Mercs and Audi's butt in reliability surveys.... !!!!

Would you get a Honda S2000 for £4.5k, unless it had done minicab mileage. How about a very late model MG ZT 2.5 V6, massively underated and therefore overlooked. From your list I'd go for the Renault, but with one granny owner and FSH.

Doubt it. Can't really see them ever dipping below £3.7-4k over the next 5 years I think they'll rise if anything.
