Hi all,
I have a Ford smax 2.0 tdci,2007 with 45000miles on the clock.i was driving along the road today and the engine went lumpy and seem to miss, put my foot on the throttle and the warning light came on and a warning saying "engine malfunction". I managed to coast to a layby. the engine wouldnt rev. i turned the engine off, started up again and its back to normal.
I have only had the cat 1 month, and still has 2 months of a so called warrenty.

Any ideas???????

Aah, the glorious TDCI Ford... When my '03 TDCI did it, it was caused by the Camshaft Position sensor. I got an orange spirally warning light at the same time though.

I think the orange glow light may have flashed, i was to bust trying to get the car of the busy road.
It did flash when i switched the engine off and went to start it again. I need to find out what it was before the warenty runs out!

This all sounds very familiar. Fingers crossed it's the cam sensor as it was only £18 to put right in my case. Don't listen to 'hawko1984', these cars don't even have Lambda sensors!

As said above, either camshaft sensor or possibly the EGR valve? Parents had this on their 1.8 TDCi focus.

If you google "EGR TDCi camshaft", you'll see it a common TDCi fault.

and don't listen to Classic Grad 98, a cam sensor failure will most often result in an instant cut, not a misfire followed by lack of revs. Most often they would also remain faulty at least until the engine has had time to cool so unlikely to restart immediately.

You say a warning light came on so it's a good bet that the ecu spotted a fault of some kind, get it code-read by someone who has enough experience to actually understand the results wink

FYI the 2 ltr TDCi Ford engine isn't related to the 1.8 TDCi.

The 2ltr (and 1.6) was a joint development with PSA, whereas the 1.8 was a Ford only effort from a previous generation.

So much for giving it a blast down the motorway, my wife managed 200 meters before it died again! starts up straight away again, and shows no message on the dash!

Fixed. The 1.8's block hasn't really changed since it appeared in the Sierra, replacing the old PSA 2.3 XDIII. All has happened is a few new heads, a turbo, and a few different injection systems.

just a quick update. the car died. went to start it tonight, fired then died. breakdown guy says that it may be the pump in the tank, as there is no fuel coming through. does this sound right??

I know that the MK1 TDCI 1.8 Focus is an unreliable, hateful lump of st. My mate owns a 2002 model and its taken £3000 over 3 years to keep on the road excluding servicing tyres and fuel etc. And he mocked me for having a 2.8 litre BMW as it would be costly to run. I know of 3 TDCI Fords, all awful.

Had the same problem in an old escort tdi, much older version of that engine. It was a faulty fuel pump. I took it to a diesel specialist and the diagnosed and fixed it very fast.

The sad thing is they are great engines when they work.

ok, a little light has been shed on the situation. My "wannabe mechanic" of a son decided he would help his old dad out and try and fit the Fuel filter. now before he tried the car was running, he undid the two pipes on the filter housing, then realising that he didn't have anything to remove filter gave up, plugged the pipes back and left it. since then it has not started, it started the first time after the pipes had been put on but died.
Could it have an air lock somewhere? im not sure about the fuel pump theory of the breakdown guy? any ideas?

If it comes up with 'engine management failure' 'power steering failure' 'throttle reduced' or similar it's a problem I had with out '07 tdci Focus with 23k on the clock. We onwed that for 9 months and within that time it was back with Fords under warranty trying to locate the issue. After a new alternator (with SmartCharge), wiring loom repairs and a new BCM they 'hoped' they had fixed it. We didn't give it a chance to prove iteslf and PX'd for a Civic boxedin

Hopefully for you it's just the lambda.
