Can I fix this exhaust hanger or is it beyond DIY repair ?

Does anyone think it is possible to strengthen this exhaust hanger by DIY or is it close to being absolutely ruined ?. Is welding a new one the only way.

Bolt one of these on, and make a new hanger which bolts to the two threaded ends of the U clamp?

Yep, or you can get variations of this;



It can be difficult to weld thin and crusty old exhaust pipe, so you could fabricate and weld a bracket/hanger to an exhaust clamp and fit that.

This was the only reason I used to have a coat hanger on the hook in the back of my Dolomite Sprint - I kept killing the rear exhaust mount on speedbumps, and a wire coathanger was exactly right for attaching it to the rear bumper.

You've got little chance of welding that. You really need to use a mig on Exhausts as they are made from thin ish material and they don't take well to rust anyway. As the others have said, Buy a suitable clamp hanger and grind the remains of that one off.

Replaced mine that snapped with a big jubilee clip around the pipe and through the bung.

Just as an aside, if you're going to use this method make sure you get ones made of decent metal.

I've budget versions that completely rotted after less than 4 months under the car. If access becomes an issue the same could be a bd.

Thanks for the replies . SO do I use the current plastic/rubber hanger part to "hang" the clamp too, or is that redundant ?

had a similar issue with my A4, although mine had completely snapped off, I was quoted £700 for a new exhaust, my mate has a welder so we joined a few clamps together to form a new one to take the weight, cost was nowt (even got the clamps from a local tyre place for free)

just dont weld it straight to the exhaust or it will go right through it.

It'll be fine. Replace it when it breaks, not before (First rule of bangerdom)
