Buying Land to Housebuild on

Been considering doing a selfbuild for a few years now. Has anyone got any advice on how one finds and buys a suitable plot? - they seem a little thin on the ground around here...

Has anyone done a self build and can point out any pitfalls you should be aware of?

Two bits of advice:

1) Any land that has been identified as a building plot is already overpriced.
2) Post in the right forum.
