Somebody has just told me that "chipped" cars will become illegal from 2012. Surely this is rubbish, a bit of digging on the net suggests there is an element of truth but policing this would be impossible......

All part of the EU Anti-Tampering legislation that is going through Brussels.

The scary part is will will not know the full content until it is passed as parts of the legislation are set by 'delegates' who are un-elected.
these parta are not released until the bill is passed into EU Law and then onto our statute book.

Good old democracy in action in the EU

Doe this mean all the remap cars will go pop or will it just cover post 2012 cars?

I don't know the full scale of this, don't care either as its bound to be bks.

But there are several critical factors to consider:

a) what is tampering? Many car makers offer dealer fit tunes, which in essence are no different to aftermarket ones.

b) which ECU? Modern cars have loads of them. I think even a p38a Range Rover has 17!

c) as a prime function of an engine ECU is to control fuel and ignition, I presume anyone with an once of engineering understanding will release, that banning ECU changes means it would be logical to also ban carb tuning, jets and needles too rolleyes

cant wait to see the ECU police coming round to check as in detail as its fairly hard to see without accessing the software on the actual chip.

Given the fact that the powers that be rarely (if ever) enforce half of the existing motoring offences (that aren't speeding), or modifications that are blindingly obvious from 20 yards (like italic numberplates in comic sans, 1 inch high letters), i don't think there will be cause for alarm.

They thought about banning illegal modifications but changed their mind once they figured out there's going to be no easy way to check

Someone just told me that if I don't forward this thread to 12 friends, my hard disk will be wiped. Anyone know if this is true?
