By Salim al Jahwari - MUSCAT — The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued the first licence for the construction of the first electric car manufacture factory in the Sultanate. The factory, which is licensed to assemble cars, will have an annual capacity of 120 cars, with commercial production set at January 2014. The licence was issued in favour of Nur Majan company, which also gives its name to the new car.
Sultan al Amri, the man who proposed to set up the factory, said that Nur Majan, the first model of which has already constructed, will be sent after its launch next January to Hong Kong where its parts will be dismantled and sent to 693 factories in the United States, Germany, Japan and China for mass production.
Al Amri pointed out that the factory, which is likely to come up in Barka or Sohar, is expected to cost RO 16.2 million. The car, which can cover a distance of more than 3,000 kilometres in one charging, is expected to cost between RO 10,000 and RO 30,000, depending on the specifications, said Al Amri, noting that the taxi of the same make and some other models will be cheaper.

its obiously some kind of weird scam scheme im just not sure how, There is ZERO way you can build an electric car with a range of 3600KM. let alone with the 0-60 times they think..
Strange how they got the deal signed in the summer, when anyone with any common sense is out the country..

Of course you can, they make no mention of how long it'll take to cover the range, when you run out of electricity there is enough power to raise a pair of sails all you have to do is wait for the wind!Strange how they got the deal signed in the summer, when anyone with any common sense is out the country..

I can't even begin to imagine how big a current tech battery would have to be to manage 3600km!! 10 tonnes maybe? Probably about half a million quid as well!
typical road load at 50mph is approx 16kW for a typical car, at which speed it would take you 44.7 hrs to do 3600km. So total "tractive" energy required at the wheels is 716kWh.
So, even if you somehow could have a 100% efficient drive system (no battery losses, no power electronics and power distribution losses, no traction machine loses etc!!) then your battery will have to be able to supply 716kWh at a suitable voltage.
A typical Pruis battery has an energy density of 44Wh/kg, so 716kWh would weigh 16,272kg !!!
(And that's gota be accelerated to 60 in sub 4 sec!!!) "Yea, canna break the laws of physics Captn" !!!

This is utter BS. The manufacturing costs alone for such a small scale operation would be way more than what they're projecting, and that's if it were a petrol car without the need for additional development. This will not materialize, at least not in the terms described in the article.

I'm sure there is a mixup with the miles per charge, possibly 300km. Looks like an interesting project to waste money on though. However, it won't get many locals out of their LandCruisers, its just a toy for their teenage sons who have graduated from annoying locals in Al Azaiba on their quadbikes
