4X4 Work Horse? Advice and Help needed!

I’m looking for a 4X4 that I can use as a bit of a work horse and not have to worry too much about it.
I’d like to spend roughly about £10k although will go up to £15k if there was something I really liked. The only thing is I have a couple requirements; it needs to be as fast as possible. Obviously I have to be realistic but something that does 0-60 in 14 seconds is absolutely no good. Also the more economical the better so it probably will end up being a diesel. I don’t mind crap fuel economy if it’s very fast and very cheap i.e. Supercharged Range Rover for £10k

I’d thought about:
• Old style Freelander 2.5 V6. 0-60 in 10 Seconds and nearly 30MPG sounded ok.
• Mitsubishi Shogun 3 Door. 0-60 in 11.5 Seconds and 36 MPG.
• Mercedes ML500 (New Style). 0-60 6.7 Seconds and 25 MPG. It was £14k which was very cheap, although it was high mileage.

Any more suggestions or opinions on the cars I’ve suggested are appreciated.

Quick question, why would you want a work horse 4x4 to have a good 0-60 time?

I have 2 different 4x4 at the moment for various jobs and they are slow as f*ck (300tdi discovery and 2.8td Pajero). I have never needed them to beat anyone off the lights.

Does it have to be big?

Jag X-Type 3.0 has permanent AWD. The manual ones do 0-60 in 6.6 secs.

Yours for under £2k - spend your change on a TVR!

As I said I'm not looking for Ferrari style Performance (I’ve got my toys for that ) but I do a lot of country driving and I needs something with the power to overtake quickly if the gap appears. There is nothing worse than being stuck behind someone for 10 Miles doing 7MPH.

In reality V6 Freelanders seem to average 15mpg.

Try this - 20mpg and 0-60 in 6.5.

V8 disco with or without LPG depending on how big your pocket is. For 10K you can buy a replacement each year for at least the next 5 years when each one fails its MOT with rot issues.

Hilux? we have a double cab pick up 3.0TDI in thailand and its pretty decent, can overtake with ease etc..

I'm perplexed as to what your requirements actually are beyond 4WD, but for completeness I will suggest a Nissan Stagea as I've just bought one, it's quite PH-y, suitably fast and volvo-like in its loadcarrying voluminousness.

Subaru Outback? 3.0 petrol can be bought quite cheaply, but it is thirsty.

With a 10-15k budget I cant see why you are even considering a Freelander 1! There is an 07 FL2 TD4 for 13k in the classifieds.

How about a 2004 or so Disco2 TD5, probably be about 7-8k then add a remap and big intercooler.

That should see you to 175-185bhp and under 10 seconds to 60 fairly easily.

Slow as fook but somewhat more of an event to drive then most other 4x4s

it's the L200 chassis, so won't rot. And regularly see them with 200,000 miles on them.

Used to work in a quarry with l200s running the same box and engine, they just got oil and filter changes 6monthly.

My dad runs a 2006 Shogun Sport, 2.5 TD as his workhorse.

Will tow a double axle caravan with ease. Will tow a trailer with car on good enough.

And has an endless capacity for sand/cement bags lobbed in the back.

£10k will get a tidy one. Don't expect luxury ride though.

They are a workhorse. Gadget/frill free

I'd agree with pretty much all of this.

I have one, it averages 30mpg. It's not very refined, but it does the job, and is strangely fun to drive, can't quite put my finger on why.

2WD on the road, but it's decent off road for having a locked centre diff and LSD on the rear (although no rear locker)

Towing capacity of 2.8T braked, which has most things covered.

Mine is in the garage today for a wheel bearing. £50 quid part, but Autodata quotes 3 hours to do the job

Good to hear you've seen them with so many miles on, mine's not quite hit 60k yet.

As I say, they're the L200 underneath aint they, and the company I worked for used to buy their L200s with 125k+ on the clock, then start using them. Lived in 4wd mode around a quarry, and never batted an eyelid.

Chassis don't rot, body don't rot.

Engine is under-powered as fk, but due to the nature of it, means it'll live forever.

As you say, they're no luxury vehicle, but if I needed a 4x4 work warrior, a low miler shogun sport would be it. Basically because they don't have anything to go wrong. No fancy gidgets that will cost £4500 to put right.

Chipping them and a bigger intercooler is supposed to help. Gearing is better suited to town/country rather than motorway IMHO.

But for sheer workhorse capabillities, they unbeatable

How about 0-60 in 7.7 seconds and still does 30mpg? Full leather, nav etc....
With a remap 250bhp is easy and throw on some decent tyres it would do the job well.
