Selling a plate from a car that has no tax or MOT

Slightly depressing thread this. I bought an E34 Alpina recently for a rock bottom price. The car hadn't been driven for four years but I was hoping to breath some fresh life into it. Anyway, long story short it looks like the project isn't going to be financially viable.

I'm now looking at how best to recover my costs and breaking it is the obvious option.

The car has a mildly interesting number plate. Is there anything I can do to get the plate on retention or sell it given the car is neither taxed or MOT'd?

As for the plate, you need the MOT or it's non transferable.

Any way for you gaffer tape and bodge the car through an MOT?

You'll have to apply to put it onto a Retention Certificate first. The process takes a couple of weeks. The vehicle will be reassigned another age-related plate and a new V5C document will be issued.

You should fetch good money for the wheels alone, the last few sets of staggered (8.5F and 10R x 17inch IIRC) ALPINA wheels have gone for £600-850 on Ebay. I'd love a set for my E32 but don't have the money at present else I'd make you an offer.

ETA: Sorry, just read the vehicle has no current MoT. In which case I do not think you can retain the number looking at the notes on the form at the attached link.

I was wondering because as usual, the form is a bit vague. It says on page 1 that you need to provide the current MoT, yet in the notes, just that vehicle must be of a type that requires one. I've never yet had occasion to retain a number from a vehicle without one, apologies to the OP for any confusion.

Not these days you cannot. It's not an over the counter thing anymore, it is processed in anything up to two weeks and posted back assuming they do not to a spot inspection, and the V778 will be posted to you from Swansea. I've only been asked a few times over the last 20+ years of doing several per month, usually when I've pointed out an incorrect entry on the Donor V5C.

Up to 12 months from the date of expiry of the Tax disc & SORN'd but it has to have an MOT. As per the most recently issued joint Retention & Cherish transfer V317 Application form.
