Watching Traffic Cops the other week, some little Irish fella was running his car home on a flat. He got pulled doing 15MPH by some bigheaded pPlod, who propmptly gave the Paddy a big lecture on danger and safety, and losing control of the car, and all the rest of the hor5est he was full of. This was at 4am, with absolutely nothing on the road. 99 out of 100 Bill on here would have policed it as they saw fit,but this guy, with the cameras on him had to be Billy big Boiiocks and nicked him.
The Bill are usually really good at spotting the line between the humorous just havin a go pi557ake, and the proper dangerous.
We've all done it, just taken the risk to get home, or get something done.
For instance, my BiL once came out of his flats at 5am one morning, and was going to Radlett. He had a Vauxhall Ha Van at the time, and someone, in the middle of the night had sloen the 12 inch mountney steering wheel. Faced with the stump of the steering column he had not option but to raid his toolbox in which he found a set of Molegrips. Yep, so he drove it up to Radlett from Stanmore at 5 am on a set of Molegrips! He did take it easy, I think the old van was a 1.0 litre.

My best one is one Sunday morning I had an old mini 850 in Tulse Hill, and lived in Anerley. Every forward gear failed, the linkage had snapped, and I could only get reverse. So I reversed it from Tulse Hill, right up to the top of Crystal Palace/ Anerley Hill turn off, and rolled it the last mile forwards. The looks people gave me up the back streets as I just carried on reversing past them were fanatastic. And I made it. Brilliant. No one was killed maimed, or hurt in any way.

So, there must be some good ones out there.
What was the worst legal pi55take you've pulled and got away with.

For the benefit of the BiB's who read this forum, I've never done anything illegal.

Thank you and carry on.

I vaguely remember the episode with the irish bloke, he also claimed he was an engineer (despite being about 18) and the car had a bunch of wheel nuts missing which he argued was safe because of "sheer forces". He deserved it, imo.

Anyway, this one time I killed a bunch of prostitutes. The police never got me even though I sent them a bunch of letters and a kidney.

A few from me in my very young and very stupid youth...

Driving a metro from work to home (5 miles) with collapsed hydrolastic suspension on the driver side.

Driving a hyundai coupe F1 when the rear brake piston wore through (pads had already gone) leaving me with very little breaking efficiency.

Driving a clio 16v with a broken engine (gearbox) mount 5 miles home.

Same clio leaving the front tyre till cord started showing (yes I am ashamed).

Being pulled over for a buckled rear wheel and literally on the limit tyre on the other side, police were absolutely fantastic, insisted I changed to the spare wheel and go straight to the nearest tyre place, no points given.

Drove a car 3 miles off the motorway when I got a flat, couldnt get the wheel off at the side of the road so drove it flat, the tyre was buggered by the end of that.

Before anyone starts yes I am ashamed of the above and I have learnt but I was a little less cautious in my youth.

I rode my motorbike for a year with only a rear brake!

Don't panic, I still had my front for emergencies it just wouldn't release if I used it! So if I had to do an emergency stop I could but I couldn't get going again until I had kicked the caliper back down!

Me too - front spindle on the twin leading shoe drum on my CB175 was stripped. Clipped a Jag rear bumper with the front fork once but he was more concerned about me so got away with that. Luckily, it was a slow old bus.

For info, driving a vehicle knowing it to be in a dangerous condition can amount to dangerous driving carrying not only a disqualification but an extended retest.

my friend fitted an AR50 with an 80 kit, and once rode it whilst drunk with his girlfriend on the back off road the 3 miles between their houses Ihe got away with it though and in his defense was 16 and very stupid at the time. IHe also caught some air on this journey which did result in the loss of some wine from the bottle his girlfriend was carrying.
Proud - no.
Regrets - none.

There is no way on the planet, that I'd want to be admitting to anything like this on a public forum . . . . . remember, the Police DO read PH and they are ALWAYS on the look out, for a way to help their stats out

Urban surfing on the roof of a 1.6l Maestro through the suffolk country lanes. 82mph the offical recorded top speed record!

I can admit to that as I was on the roof not driving so not technically speeding.

Was once driving home from work late when the steering on my old custom mini failed. You could literally spin the wheel effortlessly and it would go 5-6 full turns with nothing happening (the pinch bolt had sheared). I managed to crawl home at 5mph by forcing the column down into the floor so that the remaining splines met where it hadn't worn. That was fun...

Same car... I had changed the headlights and besides the point that I had fitted them upside down (the looked better that way), they managed to short circuit. Fortunately, the week before I had bought a 1million candle watt torch that ran off the cigarette lighter. I thought it would be fun to signal morse code on my mates bedroom window with it. It managed to get me home, one arm out the window shining it ahead...

Probably the craziest thing that happened years ago was when my dad had to move an old ford 9inch back axle, complete with diff, shafts etc. A heavy piece of kit - we didnt have a van so towed it on an old, flat, sainsburys bread trolley from a garage round the corner back to our house. It was only a few hundred yards, but trying to control the trolley was like trying to steer a bull. I cant think what it must have looked like.

Seriously, you're abit dim if you think this. wink
Most motoring offences are subject to a 6m time limit and any prosecution has to prove a who, where and what with witnesses not an admission which can be retracted at the same speed as the admission was made.
They might make an effort with a video showing speeding at 175mph or something taht serious but otherwise...no - why would they, all they have to do is look round and they could book a hundred people on mobile phones if that was their wont.

as per the OP, i had the autobox on my e28 fail on me 3-4miles from home. all forward drive was lost but it would still go in reverse. i walked home and went back for the car at 2am and reversed it all the way back and onto my drive.
