Advice needed on car selection for a charity rally

Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone could give me and my mates some advice...
we're going on a car rally called 'Bratislava or bust' in order to raise money for charity. the route will be from the north of england all the way to bratislava, and then hopefully back!
we need help looking for cars, as there are rules. the car must be under or around £250 or be older then the oldest driver (in our case it must be older than '89). we are looking for a car to carry potentially 4 people so will need to have a bit of power, and we will need to consider the insurance too, we will all be 22.
Any suggestions for car makes and models would be really amazing!

Ldone a few of these, we used to find battered mk1 shoguns that needed work and use them. Lots of space and simple to get going but a bit rare now.
A few people go for a vw sharan or galaxy a 2.0 petrol one will do fine for the mountains (seen a lotbworse on the rallies make it over).
With 4 guys youll beed space for.you and the luggage so estates are a decebt shout butnnotnthat secure for your gear, sniff out some old volvos or a rover 800 maybe?
Ebay is your friend!
Oh and buy a CB radio and aerial, will make the run a lot more interesting in a convoy

Bratislava isn't really that much effort on a car (its what - 1,500 motorway miles) so you don't need to worry *too* much about getting something flashy. 4 up plus some hand luggage each won't require a lot of power, or space. That said, I'd personally do it in something of a largish size (bigger than a fiesta) just cos it'll be nicer to drive long distances in.
big saloons are pretty unpopular, your '89\£250 cutoff should give you the delights of
Volvo 340/360/740/760/240/460 (all available in a saloon)
Sierra/Granada
Vauxhall Belmont
Audi 80
Saab 9000
But i'd say just go with what comes up. Do a search on a few of them on gumtree and see what comes up. The nearer the date you get the car, the better, as you can get things with short MOT that no-one else will touch with a bargepole.
I did the Banjul rally in a volvo 360, also drove a volvo 340 for 3,000 miles round europe (including bratislava and 9 other capital cities), and took another down the baltic coast, into turkey, then the boat across to cyprus. The only trouble we had in any of them (a total of >8000 miles in bangers without servicing) is the one we took to Banjul overheated a little whilst towing other cars in the sahara.
