Wrong registration/VIN number....EEEEEK

After some advice...

At around 12:30 last night I was stopped by the police on my way home from a friends house. Fair enough, if they were bored and thought I should be picked on.

So, I pull over and put the window down. The officer came to the window and asked how long I had the vehicle, is this a private registration, is the car mine etc. I told him I had it for 10 months and it wasnt a private plate blah blah blah. It transpired that, from their computers, my registration plate was attached to a VW Caravelle. I was slightly worried at this but I knew I hadn't done anything wrong and there might be some clown driving around with the wrong plates on. The police then ran the VIN through the same check and it also came back as a VW Caravelle...

I gave them my insurance certificate, with a Polo on the certificate. I gave them my service book, with handwritten details with VIN/registration both linked to a Polo. I gave them my V5, thinking there wouldn't be an issue, and it had a 3 door hatchback, 1390cc, red VW CARAVELLE listed!!!!

So, the police have to treat it as a stolen vehicle apparently. I was asked back to the station so they could do more digging. Luckily, a pissed up yoof was arrested that night and started a riot in the station so I was let on my way. They said they'd call me today but I haven't heard.

When I got the vehicle insured, it came up with a Polo. When I added the vehicle to the garage DMS it came up with a Polo. I have just done a few free online check and they came up with Polo. Auto Trader came up with a Caravelle.

I'm slightly worried about this now. Technically, I could have been uninsured for 10 months... Where do I go from here? Is it the fault of the dealer, DVLA or someone else? As far as I know my car is 100% legit. On the day I collected it the salesman drove it out of the showroom...

What do I do??

Your V5 says its a caravelle and you didnt notice?

Let me get this straight

Its a Polo.
Insurance DB says Polo
DVLA say Caravelle
VIN matches VRM
You bought it from a main dealer?

Has it ever had a private VRM on?

What does it say on your tax disk renewal? Are you paying the rate for a 1.4 or 1.6?

strange one have you contacted your vw dealer ?

dvla says its a red 1390c which matches mine it came up as a polo for me on auto trader & askmid using the number plate

Sounds like a dealer cock up at original registration - description of vehicle wrong.

It may sound silly that I didn't notice the V5 says Caravelle but I had no reason to check it?

Dealer is closed at weekends - will contact them in the morning

Very common there are lots of cars misregistered by dvla due to dealer or dvla errors.

The fact it all matches just The model name is different it's obvious it's a mistake can't believe the clowns wanted to take to back to the station for that what muppets they are

3 door hatch - yes
1.4 - yes
Vw - yes

Just the model listed wrong wouldn't worry about it

Always worth checking your V5. VW / DVLA had 2 attempts at getting it right for my Car - even when DVLA were told the first time they still did not fix the error... just reissued the original incorrect v5.

Worrying though - esp if you are at all paranoid about ensuring that the insurance company will pay up in the event of a prang.
