Hi guys,
My first post!
I own a Mitsubishi GTO. It has a nice aftemarket set up but I'd really like to set the whole thing up properly -boost control, wast-gates,turbo timer etc.
As Im no expert on this, can anyone pin me in the direction of a good place to start? She runs fine, but I'd like to just give it a bit of TLC as its been a while since she has been in a garage.

Hello. This lot might be more helpful - http://www.gtouk.org.uk/
PH for general chat, car-specific forums for more in-depth car-specific questions, that's what I tend to do.

Hi
I am a member on there but the set up on my GTO is a little different. The set-up for a normal GTO is electronic with MAF sensor etc, the one I have is more of a standard turbo set-up ie wastegates, large airflow etc. The guys on there generally dont deviate from the standard set-up, using tried and tested formulae. ~I would like to have to start from scratch as my car has most of the bells and whistles, it just needs to sing from the same song sheet lol .

Eh? What has wastegates got to do with the MAF sensor?

Post the spec of your car, your not really making much sense...

Ah no, your barking up the wrong tree. The 'standard' spec includes a maf, mine has waste gates, therefore negating the maf, in favour of oomph. 8)

This is going to be a good thread.

Take it somewhere that knows proper tuning, before you blow it up smile

Car themed one.

The MAF measures how much air is in the engine so the ECU can fuel the car properly. The wastegate is set to stop the engine overboosting; in a way they are related - the wastegates will stop the car running excessively lean if you are using an enormous turbocharger, but that would only make sense if you were guessing at the A/F mixture (i.e. using a carburettor) which is tantamount to building a V-6 grenade with a big turbo.

Read.

Do some reading on the standard setup for the GTO, do some reading on how turbocharged engines work, find out what's what, and then read up on what people are doing. TBH it doesn't sound like you are up to speed on the basics, and dicking around with what you don't understand could be expensive...

IMHO the best way to go is all in one management - ignition, fuel, boost, mapped properly. Not the cheapest way though.

GTO's have wastegates as well as MAF. The most important thing is to make sure you are not running lean and producing excessive knock count, if you are the engine can self destruct. You need to log what is happening to make sure all is ok. Also make sure you have changed the cam belt, oil tensioner and water pump if these have not been done as failure of any of these components will kill the engine, ie valves into pistons.

Yes I have read, thats why the thread was asking if I could be pointed in the right direction as most of the reading is either irrelevant of massively over complicated , the car has been to a 'tuning' company but not a great job has been done, this was a while ago and as the guys an asshat of the highest order, I'd like to have a go myself.
I would ideally like a resource to research based generally on my set-up, any info anyone could point me to would be gratefully received. I wouldn't say I know nothing about setting up my system, but I'd always be open to any greater knowledgesmile

Well there is a japchat sub forum here, with some owners of very nice GTOs. Maybe introduce yourself there with GTO in the title.

you need to post your whole existing setup, target performance, what you want to uses the car for and budget for anyone to really help though.

the engine has had a nice rebuild. The previous owner really hammered it. So I paid for the whole thing to get new piston rings, Nitrided crank, new cam belt, con rods, whilst it was up, I thought I'd give it a bit of TLC. The only problem is the set-up. As its not 'GTO standard' im struggling a bit as to whats the best way to approach the turbo set-up. The engine can be hooked up to a laptop to find out the knock count on a run,so thats not a problem.

This is the guy......
