Baffled by Barrying...

I traded my old car in three months ago to upgrade.
The old car in question, a '52 plate saxo VTR, totally standard. totally unmolested, 48k miles.
Saw it again on friday... matt black painted wheels, numberplate relocated to the bottom of the bumper (leaving a lovely indentation in the bumper where the numberplate would normally go), sticker reading "the older i get, the slower i go" stuck across the back windscreen.
My question is thus:
Why pay the over-inflated price the dealer was charging for a "good" saxo, then spoil it. why not buy a cheaper one that's already been pre-barried.

It is pointless as proved by the number of gormless idiots around where i live who think that driving Saxo's, Corsa's 106's etc with big exhausts, oversized alloy wheels, drivers seat reclined to almost vertical & which pump out ridiculous dance music is cool.

Don't think its restricted to younger peeps either. Growing up, each year my (so called) father would get a nice new Cavalier, which he would proceed to "modify" to his own erm, "taste" often including them cheap stick on drivers door lock protector things from halfrauds, they wouldn't even fit/look right! square shape against a round lock?!
Only deep within do they know why!

I can understand the desire to modify, tinker, improve and perhaps subtly change a cars looks but I dotn know what thought process is involved to spend thirty grand on "Lambo" doors, a lairy bodykit, massive wheels, huge stereo in lieu of rear seats that could actually kill you, ten exhausts, lexus lights, neons etc etc.
Each to their own but I just dont get it, on no level do they usually look good, even my 12 year old self would baulk at some of the creations, I thought it may be an age thing but you then see 50 odd year old blokes (usually called Roy or Ray) driving old BM's with similar stuff done to them, plus they are usually an M Power, Ac Schnitzer, Hartge, Alpina mash up, not just a bog spec 1988 520i.
I think its an intelligence thing, I think the desire to stand out in a showy manner is proportionate to IQ, judging by the standard of English in the ads for Barried cars, with their "Big Boar" "Zorsts", "Manuel" gearboxes etc etc I can only imagine that we arent talking Mensa members, also it seems to be a socio economic thing, I have noticed that people with less money tend to wear more "bling" to perhaps appear more wealthy than they are, Soveriegn rings and women at bingo doing a fair impression of Mr T so perhaps its the same when it comes to cars, try and make your car look more expensive than it is, however, in actual fact it almost always acheives the opposite result but perhaps in that particular circle a lot of gold and a hideous modified car open doors ?
Basically though, whatever the result or motivation, if someone has invested time and effort in it and they like it then whats they harm (assuming its roadworthy and all legal), they may be baffled by our fascination with small, girly, Japanese convertibles, I personally would err on the side of the Barry in preference to the utter tedium of the rise of the silver German car with black leather and premium sat nav (for resale), in fact I had a Rover BRM, a car pre-barried for me by MG Rover

I live in a desirable area and may sometimes choose to lower the tone, should of heard the muttering when some new people moved in and the van they turned up in turned out to be a permanent fixture as he runs a furtniture business, bloody snobs, should see the looks of pity/confusion/contempt when I am spannering on one of my heaps, they cant understand it some of them, I dont think some realise the bit at the front comes up.because its his car and he can do as he wants with it i suspect.

ive changed my boxster dramatically, and i dare say more will hate it than like it, but i did it for my likes and my enjoyment, not for anyone else. its mine, its paid for in full and im not worried about the resale value, so for me, i get more pleasure from the car being the way i want it.

Exactly, OP you sold the car so why the hell do you care if someone decided to rework it. There are plenty of reasons why the car is now matt black, maybe the owner really wanted a matt black car and it is rare to find a factory paint job and wrap is dam expensive. It could be that someone keyed the car and a matt black paint job was preferred to claiming off their insurance.
From the sounds of it being low mileage an previously well looked after car it is a perfect starting point for a project as opposed to spending time an money on a POS

We all have tastes and such but even when I was little I never could work out why you would spend hard earned cash to have something LOOK like it could do something it actually couldnt.
It's not like these parts/mods are that inexpensive, why not spent the cash on making it actually go faster, instead of sounding broken...
