Hi,

The missus and I have only required 1 car and she's always insured it with me as the named driver because it was the cheapest option. However I'd like to get something cheap and fun so started looking at quotes and things like a 1992 Mazda MX5 is coming out at £1200. Our 2003 Golf comes out at £1100.

No accidents but I have a SP50 3 points (83 mph on an empty motorway by a kind officer sitting on a bridge).

Any ideas on how I can bring the cost down, or any interesting ideas on how to build up some no claims?! I thought the £+1000 days of insuring cars were long gone for me!

Car will be parked on the drive (or garage), not a rough area (EN6).

Using the price comparison websites. Haven't considered a classic car - would that work, how old is classic?

I use Swift for 2 cars both in my wifes name with me as the main driver on "my" car.

Hence my wifes NCB can be mirrored.

Its all legit, I checked 3 times before going ahead.

No idea what's the renewal's going to be.

Something like an MGB? At 28 mine cost me about 100 quid a year on a classic policy.

Bloody hell your quotes are tear-jerking. I'm paying half that and I'm 5 years younger...

Get a kit car or a classic ... or any sort of specialist car.

It doesn't have to be old or handbuilt - my two TVRs have both been on 'classic' policies. The first cost me £225pa to insure. At 24. In London. With a recent claim. I'd have struggled to insure a moped for that premium!

ETA When I say London, what I mean is "inside the M25". I'm actually in EN2 so must be pretty local to you...

I would agree with the above - with a slight twist -> buy two cars:

1. something cheap (both to buy + insure) - but reliable-ish... say 500-1k worth (and you can make this something practical)
2. classic thats fun up 2k ... you could even include an mx5 in a classic car policy !

Reason being that some classic car policies demand that you have a main car... also you will only really be forestalling the time when you do need to get insurance and this way with a 'main' car you will build up some no claims + some history.

This allows you to go a little crazy with teh classic/kit car as well as you got the other in times of bad weather / winter ... making it really the best of both worlds!

Unless you only have space for one - in which case just ignore me.

Cheers, some good ideas - knew this was the place to ask!

space for 2 cars (classic + golf), but can chuck a banger on the road... classic + banger for insurance purposes sounds good. Plus we're doing a house up at the moment so it would serve a purpose!

TVR S2 = classic right?! biggrin

Very much so, the car I mentioned in the example above was an S3. It was the cheapest car I've ever insured.

You might want to stretch the budget a touch above £3k to get a good one, but suitably looked after they're brilliant cars; signficantly quicker than an MX5 (in a straight line at least), more practical and infinitely more characterful. Not as nimble and not quite as cheap to run, but closer than you might imagine on both counts - especially if you save £800 on your insurance!

Nice one! Do it and post up what classic (and what banger!) you get!

Edit - when you insure the banger pull out all the stops to reduce that premium, i.e. you can make it 3rd party fire and theft only, limited miles, etc etc

This will get you on the ladder to your ncb and you can enjoy the classic.

Incidentally I say 'banger' but these days you can get a lot of car for the sub 1k mark...
