So, I've had some money sitting in savings but always left it there too worried to spend it and risk losing it on a depreciating car. Hence always owning older cars that won't depreciate much. However I have always wanted something newer, and figure that if I don't do it now then when will I?

So anyway, can I spend £12k on a 2007 Mk2 Audi TT and expect to lose £1500/year just in depreciation? If so, then I can stomach that amount and replenish my savings from salary at the same rate leaving me Even with Steven. I've arrived at this figure by trying to gauge the likely depreciation from used car adverts, but I am not sure if £1500/year is right or an underestimate. I don't do many miles, <10k/year so it won't gain too many.

Also - suggestions please for interesting alternatives that won't depreciate too much and have circa Audi TT 2.0 TFSI runnning costs? Must be useable everyday and okay to park in the street without worrying too much. <5 years old is very much preferred. Reasons I like the TT: performance, interior, exterior, overall feel of a small low coupe, and it's fairly light. I know it won't set my hair on fire even as much as my Mercedes 190 though :/.

It'll lose about 1/4 of its value a year, at a rough guess. Most cars do.

Thats a rough as fk guess which applies to very few situations tbh..

It all depends on the car itself, the mileage your doing etc.

A citroen is going to depreciate much quicker than something like, for example a MINI which hold value very well.

Likewise if your doing 20k a year miles in the car then its going to lose more a year than if your only doing 5k a year.

There are many variables.

1260Kg according to the brochure (I am thinking 2.0 tfsi front wheel drive, although I bet a v6 quattro roadster is more like 1500Kg.

I would've thought this would more likely loose £3k in the 1st year, maybe £2k the next and it'll slow down after that but it depends when you get rid of it and who to (and how many miles you put on it etc).

You won't buy from a dealer for £12k and then part ex it a year later for £10.5k though.

If you want an indication of depreciation. My dad's car when it was new cost someone £37,000. He got it at 25,000 miles and 2.5 years old for just over half the original cost. I think it was about £18,000 in the end. This is on BMW so I hate to imagine what Audi are like biggrin

Audi TT's depreciate as slowly as anything, especially the diesel.

I'd imagine something like the TT will holds its value better than a mainstream BMW, but not much. Probably similar if it was something like a Z4.

Hmm, some mixed answers here then!
I am comparing cost of private sale vs. private sale - i would expect to pay an extra two times if buying from, and then trading in to, a dealer.
I'll sleep on it, maybe in the morning will think it was the worst idea i've ever had.

You will loose a bit more than 1500 on the first year , it should slow down after . You can probably buy an really nice 2008 Mazda rx8 for 6k , keep it 3 years and sell it on for 3k

But would have to live with the shocking tax, fuel and servicing consequences meantime...

A £12k lotus elise should hold its value better than a TT, I use mine every day as its my only car and its parked on the street every night.
