Hi all

I hate the fact that in our modern world we have to think about stuff like this, but hopefully someone can tell me if I am being overly paranoid or not.

My wifes Mum is paid to child mind someone elses kids. The young lad is 5, and since he is the same age as our own son they have spent a lot of time together since birth while the wife has been at her mums. As a result, the two boys are quite good mates and see a lot of each other in the school holidays, while the kid is under the paid care of my mother in law.

I have told my wife that since his Mum is paying someone to look after him, and we have nothing to do with that, he shouldn't be traveling in my vehicle during the hours he is in paid care with the mother in law, as I don't believe we would be covered should the worst happen and his Mum tried to persue a claim.

Wife thinks I am being an arse.

Any opinions?

My opinion is there's absolutely no problem, but only her insurance company could give a definite answer. Suggest you get it in writing.

Nothing to prevent you bringing the claim.

I guess that only thing would be about the policy having business class, but even then the insurer would be liable if they didn't.

You don't forsee an issue then if the little one was injured in our car, while the kids mum was paying for him to be looked after by someone else.

I suppose that's good news. Buggers up my plan to stop it happening though.

Ah, sorry, misread.

But still no problem, your social journey doesn't turn into business because you give a chap a lift to the station. No insurer asks if you are giving kids a lift who should be at the child minders ! Fundamentally, they can't bin your cover for something they didn't ask about.

If your wife is taking your son and he friend out to the park there is no issue, although the mum might want to know where the hell the women she paid to look after her son is while your wife takes them out.

If your wifes mother is using your car to take her grandchild and the child in her care and not declaring it as business use there might be an issue in the event of a crash.
