Whats a possible cause for n auto to stall?

My 1992 Toyota Corolla auto has started to stall for some reason.

It seems to happen when slowing to stop in traffic and the check engine light comes on and a couple of times after restarting and pulling away it seemed to struggle and the check engine lights flashed off then on.

Anyone have any ideas as I can only get the missus to take the car in and everytime she takes it some where they seem to over exagerate (sp) whats wrong.

Obvious thing would be to check the engine management and see what code it's throwing. A 1992 (OBD1) should be fairly easy, I dare say you can get away with shorting pins on the connector.

If you want my wild stab in the dark guess I'd start by questioning the IAC valve, but really the computer knows what's going on, just ask it.

Possibly clogged injectors or some other fuel system problem?

but it always restarts fine? Difficult to know without more information. I think I'm going to change my guess to the MAF....fine at wide openings but not when nearly closed.

Yeah, restarted ok the first time it happen yesterday, then struggled a bit when it happened today.

It's also fine first thing in the morning on my way to work, but it seems to only happen on the way home.

Also, showing my ignorance of all things automotive would I need an external reader/cable to laptop to read these codes as theres no digital display in my fine example of a car with soul lol.

Normally, it will do it through a series of flashes, etc, on the dashboard lights.

Yeah, all a reader will do is short the correct pins and have a nice display. The only good thing is that it will come with a book of fault codes. A well placed paper clip and some research on the internet will do the same job cheaper.
